A pre-purchase inspection is an independent check of a used car before you buy it. In the UAE it usually costs a few hundred dirhams, and it can save you thousands. This guide explains what you get, what it costs and when it is worth paying for.
What does a pre-purchase inspection check?
A good inspection covers the whole car, not just the engine:
- Engine and gearbox: leaks, noises, mounts, fluid condition and gear changes.
- Brakes, suspension and steering: wear, knocks, play and alignment signs.
- Electrics: battery, lights, AC, screens and a diagnostic scan of the control modules.
- Body and chassis: paint, panel gaps and structural signs of accident repair.
- Interior: seats, belts, airbags and signs of water damage.
- Road test: how the car drives, brakes and shifts, where the seller allows it.
You get a written report you can use to negotiate, ask for repairs or walk away. See exactly what we include on our pre-purchase inspection page.
How much does it cost in the UAE?
Prices vary with the depth of the check. Gulf News has reported comprehensive checks at independent workshops costing roughly AED 199 to AED 400, depending on what is included. Testing centres also offer inspections.
At FixAnyCars, plans are AED 299 (Essential), AED 399 (Standard, with full scan and road test) and AED 799 (Comprehensive), carried out wherever the car is in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman.
What can an inspection find?
Common findings that change a deal include:
- Oil or coolant leaks that will need gasket or pump work
- Gearbox slipping, judder or harsh shifts
- Air suspension leaks on luxury SUVs
- Worn brakes, tyres and suspension bushes
- Old accident repairs, sometimes structural
- Signs of flood damage
- Stored fault codes that were recently cleared
Even when the car is good, the report gives you confidence and a record of its condition on the day.
When is it worth it?
An inspection is most valuable when:
- The car is a luxury, performance or 4x4 model where repairs are expensive. We have dedicated checks for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Range Rover, Lexus, Audi, Nissan Patrol, Land Cruiser and supercars.
- You are buying from a private seller with no warranty.
- The car is imported or has a short local history.
- The price looks too good.
- You are not confident checking a car yourself.
It is less critical for a nearly new car with a manufacturer warranty and full agency history, although it still shows accident repairs that a warranty does not cover.
Is it the same as the RTA test?
No. The registration test at an RTA or Tasjeel centre checks whether the car is safe and legal to register. It does not assess whether the engine or gearbox is wearing out, or whether the car has had accident repairs. A pre-purchase inspection answers a different question: is this car worth buying at this price?
How to get the most from an inspection
- Ask the seller's permission first and agree a time.
- Share the chassis number and listing link when you book.
- Ask the seller to have service invoices and the registration card at the car.
- Do not pay a deposit until you have read the report.
- Use the findings to negotiate, or to walk away without regret.
Book an inspection
FixAnyCars inspects used cars at the seller's location in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. You get a written report sent to you, not the seller. Book a pre-purchase inspection or read our used car checklist first.
