When to check a car for flood damage
- The interior smells damp or musty, or of strong air freshener
- The carpets or seats look newer than the rest of the interior
- There is condensation inside the headlights or tail lights
- Warning lights flicker or electric windows and seats act randomly
- The car was sold at an insurance auction or has a short ownership history
- The price is lower than similar cars and the seller is in a hurry
What usually causes it
Water in the cabin and under carpets
Flood water leaves silt and tide marks under carpets, in the spare wheel well and behind trim panels. We lift what can be lifted and look for dirt, rust and staining.
Corroded wiring and connectors
Water corrodes connectors and control modules slowly. A scan can show communication faults between modules that point to water damage.
Rust in unusual places
Seat rails, seat belt anchors, pedal boxes and bolts under the dashboard rarely rust on a normal UAE car. Rust there is a strong flood sign.
Mechanical damage from water
Water in the engine, gearbox or differentials causes damage that may not show immediately. We check fluids for milky contamination and the engine for rough running.
By make and model
Cars with many electronic modules
Modern luxury cars have more wiring and modules in the floor and under seats, so water damage is more costly to repair on them.
Low-slung saloons and sports cars
Cars with low air intakes take in water more easily, so we pay extra attention to the engine and air intake system on these.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Heavy rain is rare in the UAE, but when it comes, underground car parks and low roads flood quickly. Some flooded cars were written off and others quietly repaired, so buyers need to check, especially for cars that were in Dubai or Sharjah in April 2024.
Questions about flood-damaged car check
Can flood damage always be detected?
Not always. A carefully repaired car can hide it well. We look for the signs that are hardest to remove and tell you how confident we are.
Is a flood-repaired car always a bad buy?
Not always, but it should be cheaper and you should know about it. Electrical problems can appear long after the repair.
Does every inspection include the flood checks?
Yes, the main signs are checked in every plan. If you are particularly worried, tell us and we will spend more time on them.
Can I check the insurance history myself?
You can ask the seller for insurance and repair records, and for imported cars run a vehicle history report. We check the physical evidence on the car.
