BMW Pre-Purchase Inspection
A used BMW can be a great buy or an expensive lesson, and the difference usually sits in a handful of known weak spots. Our BMW pre-purchase inspection goes through the whole car and then looks hard at those weak spots, so you know what you are buying before you pay a deposit.

How we do bmw pre-purchase inspection
- 1
Tell us the model and engine
Send the listing or the registration card when you book, so the technician knows which engine and gearbox to expect and which known issues apply to that exact car.
- 2
Cold start and engine bay check
Where the seller allows, we start the engine from cold to hear the timing chain, then check gaskets, coolant pipes, the expansion tank and belts for leaks or cracks.
- 3
Full scan and road test
On the Standard and Comprehensive plans we scan every module with a BMW-capable tool and road-test the car for gearbox shift quality, xDrive behaviour, brakes and suspension knocks.
- 4
Report with BMW-specific notes
Your report lists what is fine, what needs work soon and which faults are typical for that model, so you can price the repairs into your offer.
Why a used BMW needs an independent check
- The listing says full service history, but the stamps stop after the warranty ran out
- There is a faint smell of hot oil after a drive, or oil spots under the car on the seller's driveway
- The car was imported, and you are not sure how it was looked after before it arrived in the UAE
- The dash is clear, but the seller mentions a warning light that 'came on once and went away'
- You are looking at a high-mileage 3 Series, 5 Series or X5 priced well below similar cars
- The seller cannot show you an invoice for recent cooling system or gasket work
What usually causes it
Valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks
These gaskets harden with heat and age on many BMW petrol engines. Oil then seeps onto the exhaust manifold or the auxiliary belt, which is why a burning smell is a clue worth chasing. We look for fresh oil, old residue and signs that the engine bay was cleaned just before the viewing.
Cooling system parts near the end of their life
Electric water pumps, thermostats, expansion tanks and plastic coolant pipes are wear items on BMWs, and Gulf heat shortens their life. We check coolant level and condition, look for crusted leaks and read stored cooling faults.
Timing chain wear on some four-cylinder engines
Some N20 and N26 four-cylinder engines fitted to 2012 to 2016 cars are known for timing chain guide wear. A rattle on a cold start is the classic warning. We listen for it and check whether the work has already been done.
Electronic faults and xDrive transfer case wear
BMWs carry dozens of control modules. A scan of every module shows battery registration problems, sensor faults and transfer case codes. On xDrive cars we also feel for binding or a shudder when the car turns tightly at low speed.
By make and model
BMW 3 Series and 5 Series
Oil leaks from the valve cover and filter housing are the most common finding, followed by cooling system wear on cars over about 80,000 km.
BMW X5 and X6
Heavier cars that see more stop-start driving, so brakes, suspension bushes and the transfer case get extra attention alongside the engine checks.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Many used BMWs in the UAE have spent years parked outside in summer and running short trips with the AC on full. That combination ages rubber seals, plastic cooling parts and batteries faster than the service schedule assumes, so a car that looks perfect can still be due expensive work soon after you buy it.
Questions about bmw pre-purchase inspection
Can you check a BMW at a dealership or a used car showroom?
Yes, as long as the showroom allows an independent inspection. We come to the car anywhere in Dubai, Sharjah or Ajman.
Will you check whether the BMW service history is genuine?
We compare the service records you have with the mileage, the condition of the car and what the scan shows, and note anything that does not add up.
Which plan is right for a used BMW?
We suggest Standard or Comprehensive, because the full module scan and the road test are where most BMW problems show up.
Can you fix what you find?
Yes. If you buy the car, we can quote the repairs at our workshop with pickup and delivery, and you choose OEM, aftermarket or used parts.
