Airbag System Repair

Airbags and seat-belt pretensioners are single-use. After they fire, the parts have to be replaced, the sensors and wiring checked, and the control module cleared of its crash record. Skipping any of those steps leaves a car that looks repaired but may not protect you next time. Safety-related parts matter more than appearance, so we are strict about specification here.

Signs you need airbag system repair

  • One or more airbags have deployed in an accident
  • The SRS or airbag light stays on after a collision, even with no deployment
  • Seat belts that locked tight in the crash and no longer retract properly
  • A dashboard or steering wheel cover torn open by an airbag
  • A crash that did not fire the airbags but damaged sensors in the bumper or door
  • A crash after which the horn and steering-wheel buttons stopped working

What usually causes it

Deployment consumes the bag

A fired airbag, its inflator and its cover cannot be reused. Neither can pretensioners, which fire at the same moment to pull the belt tight.

Crash sensors damaged

Front and side impact sensors are mounted in crush zones. A heavy knock can damage them, and the module may then refuse to arm the system.

Module stores the crash

After a deployment, the control unit records the event and often locks. Some can be reset, and others must be replaced.

Wiring and clock spring damage

The coil behind the steering wheel and the yellow connectors under the seats can be damaged by crash forces, causing faults.

How we do airbag system repair

  1. 1

    Scan and document the crash

We read the SRS module to see which bags fired, what faults are stored and what sensors reported, and photograph the damage.

  2. 2

    Replace deployed components

Airbags, covers, pretensioners and damaged belts are replaced. You choose among OEM and other options where they exist, and we explain that safety parts must meet specification.

  3. 3

Replace or repair sensors and harness

Impact sensors, wiring and connectors are inspected and replaced where damaged. The clock spring is checked as well.

  4. 4

    Reset or replace the module

The crash data is cleared as the maker allows, or the module is replaced and coded to the car.

  5. 5

    Final test

The system is scanned, the warning light must go out and stay out, and each component is verified as present and connected.

Beware of repairs where the airbag light is simply switched off, or a resistor is fitted in place of a missing bag. These tricks do exist and a used car may have one. If you are buying, have the SRS system read, and if you are repairing, insist on documented replacement parts. We keep a record of what was fitted and provide it for your insurer or a later buyer.

Questions about airbag system repair

Can an airbag be repacked or reused?

No. Deployed bags are replaced. We do not use repacked or unverified bags.

Why is airbag repair expensive?

Several parts are replaced at once: bags, belts, sensors and sometimes the module. The quote itemises each so you can see the cost.

Can I keep driving while the SRS light is lit?

Assume the system might not work. Get it checked promptly.

Will the car pass a vehicle test with an airbag light?

An SRS warning light on the dash is typically a reason for concern at a test, so repair it first.

After a deployment, how long until the car is safe again?

Once every deployed part is replaced, sensors tested and the module cleared, with the light staying off after a drive. We give you the record of the parts used.

What about the seat belts?

Belts that fired their pretensioner are replaced. We also check the other belts for stretching or damaged webbing after the impact.
