Clear Coat Restoration
Clear coat is the transparent top layer that protects the colour. When it fails it peels away in sheets, leaving a rough, dull patch. Once it starts, it does not stop, so the repair is to remove the failing layer completely and apply a new one. The sooner a peeling patch is treated, the smaller and cheaper the repair.

How we do clear coat restoration
- 1
Mark the extent of the failure
We tap and lift the edges to see how far the loose clear extends, because the visible damage is usually smaller than the real area.
- 2
Remove the failed layer
The loose and weak clear coat is sanded back to sound material. Where the colour layer is also damaged, it is recoloured.
- 3
Apply fresh clear coat
New clear lacquer is applied over the panel to a natural break such as a panel edge, so no line is left across the middle.
- 4
Bake and polish
The panel is baked to harden, polished and checked in different lights.
Signs it is time
- A whitish, cloudy patch on the roof or bonnet that is growing
- Edges of the clear layer lifting like a sunburnt skin
- Rough, flaking lacquer where the colour underneath has gone matt
- Clear coat missing on top surfaces while the sides of the car look fine
- Scrub marks left on one panel after polishing went wrong
What usually causes it
UV attack on horizontal surfaces
Roofs, bonnets and boot lids receive the full overhead sun. The clear layer gradually loses its bond to the colour beneath until it lifts.
Poor adhesion in a past repair
A previous respray where the surface was not sanded correctly can fail at the join, often with a distinct line.
Heat plus harsh chemicals
Strong cleaners and solvent spills in hot weather soften and damage the clear layer.
By make and model
Hyundai, Kia and Nissan
Several popular models of the 2000s and 2010s, particularly in white and silver, are commonly seen with peeling roofs and bonnets after years of Gulf sun.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Clear coat failure is one of the most visible forms of sun damage on cars in the UAE, and white cars show it as a dull patch before it peels. Catching it early limits the repair to one panel. Waiting until the colour layer has gone means priming and recolouring too. Parking under cover for even part of the day extends the life of the new coat. A ceramic or sealant coating applied after the repair gives the new clear layer extra resistance to the sun, and is worth considering on a car that lives outdoors.
Questions about clear coat restoration
Can I just polish peeling clear coat?
No. Polishing does not re-bond a lifting layer. It must be removed and replaced.
Will it peel again?
Properly applied clear coat lasts for years. It depends on the preparation and on how much sun the panel gets afterwards.
Do you need to paint the whole roof?
We repair to the nearest natural boundary so no line shows, which usually means the whole panel.
Can this be done without matching colour?
If the colour underneath is sound, only clear is replaced. If it has failed too, we match and respray the colour.
Is the repair covered if the paint fails again?
Ask for the terms on your written quote. We state what is covered for the particular job rather than make a blanket promise.
Can I drive in the meantime?
Yes, but wash gently and avoid brush car washes, as they can lift the edge of the damaged area and make it larger.
