When a car vibrates, when it happens is the best clue. A shake through the steering wheel at highway speed usually means the wheels need balancing. A shudder only when you brake points to uneven brake discs. Vibration at idle or when accelerating often comes from engine or gearbox mounts, a misfire, or a worn CV joint or driveshaft.

Why does my steering wheel shake at highway speed?

The most common cause is wheel imbalance. A wheel and tyre are never perfectly even, so small weights are clipped or stuck to the rim to balance them. If a weight falls off, or a tyre wears unevenly, the wheel wobbles as it spins.

The typical pattern: smooth at low speed, a shake starting somewhere around 80 to 100 km/h, sometimes easing again at higher speeds. If the shake is in the steering wheel, the problem is usually at the front. If you feel it more in the seat, it is often at the rear.

On UAE highways, where long stretches at steady speed are normal, imbalance is easy to notice. It also wears tyres, suspension parts and wheel bearings faster. Wheel balancing starts from AED 79.

Other causes of a speed-related shake:

  • A damaged tyre. A bulge in the sidewall, often from hitting a kerb or a speed bump hard, or a tyre with a separated belt. A bulge is a safety risk; replace the tyre.
  • A bent rim. Kerbs and potholes can bend a rim slightly. Balancing will not fix a bent rim.
  • Uneven tyre wear, from incorrect pressures or worn suspension.
  • Loose wheel nuts after a tyre change. Rare, but dangerous. If a vibration starts right after wheel work, stop and check.

Why does my car shake when I brake?

A vibration or pulsing in the brake pedal or steering wheel only while braking usually means the front brake discs are uneven. People call it "warped discs". In practice it is more often uneven thickness or pad material deposited unevenly on the disc, after the brakes got very hot and the car was held still with the brake pressed.

UAE conditions make this common: heavy braking from highway speed, then holding the car at a traffic light with hot brakes, and long descents on mountain roads.

What to know:

  • A pulse felt in the pedal and steering when braking from speed points to the front discs.
  • A shake felt in the seat while braking can be the rear discs.
  • Discs can sometimes be skimmed if they are thick enough, otherwise they are replaced.

See brake disc replacement, from AED 349 per axle. A sticking caliper can also cause uneven heating; your technician will check it at the same time.

Why does my car vibrate when idling?

If the car shakes while stopped at a light, in Drive, but the wheels are not turning, look at the engine side:

  • Worn engine or gearbox mounts. Rubber mounts hold the engine and absorb its vibration. Heat hardens and cracks them over time. A worn mount lets the engine's vibration into the cabin, and you may feel a clunk when shifting into Drive or Reverse. See transmission mount replacement, from AED 299.
  • A misfire. One cylinder not firing properly makes the engine run rough, often with a check engine light. See engine misfire diagnosis.
  • A dirty throttle body or idle problems, which make the idle uneven.
  • AC load. When the AC compressor engages at idle, the engine works harder. A slight change is normal; a heavy shake is not.

Why does my car vibrate when accelerating?

If the vibration appears when you accelerate and fades when you lift off, think about the parts that carry power to the wheels:

  • Worn CV joints. On front-wheel-drive cars, the inner CV joint can cause a shudder under acceleration. An outer joint usually clicks when turning sharply, such as in a car park. A torn CV boot lets out grease and lets in sand, which wears the joint quickly.
  • Driveshaft or propshaft problems on rear and four-wheel-drive cars.
  • Worn engine mounts, which let the engine move under load.

Our suspension repair service covers CV and driveshaft checks.

What if the vibration comes with a hum or a noise?

A humming or growling noise that rises with speed, sometimes changing when you turn, points to a wheel bearing. It can come with a light vibration in the floor. A worn bearing gets louder over time and should be replaced before it fails. See wheel bearing replacement, from AED 399 per wheel.

Worn tie rod ends and ball joints can also cause a shimmy in the steering, often with clunks over bumps. See tie rod end replacement.

Does wheel alignment cause vibration?

Not usually on its own. Poor alignment makes the car pull to one side and wears tyres unevenly, and that uneven wear can then cause vibration. If your car pulls and vibrates, ask for both checks.

What should I note before booking?

  1. The speed at which it starts and stops.
  2. When: cruising, braking, accelerating, idling or turning.
  3. Where you feel it: steering wheel, brake pedal, seat or floor.
  4. Anything recent: a kerb hit, new tyres, brake work, a pothole.
  5. Any noises or warning lights that came with it.

Is your car vibrating right now?

A sudden, strong vibration, especially after hitting something, is a reason to slow down and stop safely. Check the tyres for bulges or a flat. If the car does not feel safe to drive, use breakdown recovery; the fee is agreed before the truck is sent.

For a vibration that has built up over time, our wheel vibration diagnosis starts from AED 99. Diagnosis is free if you go ahead with the repair with us, otherwise it is charged at the amount on your quote. You get a written quote before any work, with a choice of OEM, aftermarket or used parts. Repairs are done at our workshop; pickup and delivery is available across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.
