Transmission Mount Replacement
The transmission mount is a rubber or fluid-filled block that holds the gearbox to the body and absorbs its vibration and torque. When it tears or softens, the gearbox moves more than it should, and you feel it as clunks, shakes and jerks.

Signs you need transmission mount replacement
- A clunk or thud when moving from Park to Drive or Reverse
- A jolt when you lift off or press the accelerator sharply
- Vibration through the floor or seat that gets worse in gear
- The engine and gearbox visibly rocking when the selector is moved
- A knock from underneath when going over bumps or into driveways
- Gear lever vibration in a manual car
What usually causes it
Rubber perished by heat
Rubber hardens and cracks under constant heat from the engine and exhaust, until it splits and the metal parts move freely.
Oil contamination
Engine oil or gearbox fluid leaking on to a mount softens the rubber and ruins it far sooner than normal ageing.
Hydraulic mount failure
Fluid-filled mounts leak internally, so they stop damping vibration. This tends to show as a deeper shake and a thump on starting and stopping.
Extra loads from tuning or hard use
Aggressive launches and heavy towing add torque which tears mounts faster than they were designed for.
How we do transmission mount replacement
- 1
Test the movement
With the car on the ground, a technician shifts between Drive and Reverse with the brake held while a second person watches the engine and gearbox move. Excess travel points to a bad mount.
- 2
Inspect on the lift
We look for cracked rubber, separation from the metal, leaking fluid and any contact between the gearbox and body or exhaust.
- 3
Support and replace
The gearbox is supported while the mount is unbolted and swapped. We check the engine mounts at the same time, because one worn mount loads the others.
- 4
Torque and road test
Bolts are tightened in position under normal load and we test for vibration and clunks. Exhaust clearance and wiring are rechecked.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Rubber takes a hammering from Dubai heat, and a mount that would last 10 years in a cool climate can fail in five or six. Speed bumps, kerbs and uneven parking-garage ramps also give a worn mount a hard knock, so symptoms often show up first in the car park.
Questions about transmission mount replacement
Is a worn mount dangerous?
Not immediately, but a loose gearbox can stress exhaust joints, wiring, hoses and driveshafts, and the vibration is tiring. Fix it before something else is damaged.
Should I change all the mounts?
Not necessarily. We inspect them all and replace the ones that have failed. When one is gone, the neighbours are carrying more load and may be close behind.
Are aftermarket mounts as good?
Quality varies. The quote lists OEM and good aftermarket options, with the difference in price and a note on how hydraulic mounts compare with plain rubber.
Can a mount cause vibration only at idle?
Yes. A collapsed mount lets engine vibration through the body at idle, particularly with the AC on. Reducing the load on the engine often changes the feeling, which helps us pinpoint it.
Why does the clunk come only when I select Reverse?
Reverse puts the heaviest twist on the gearbox as the car moves backwards, so a split mount lets the unit rock further than in Drive. It is one of the clearest signs and helps us find the failed mount quickly.
Does a mount affect the exhaust or the driveshaft?
Yes. When the gearbox sags, exhaust joints, the driveshaft angle and wiring all take extra strain. We look at these while the car is on the lift.
