CVT Transmission Repair
A CVT has no fixed gears. A steel belt or chain runs between two cone-shaped pulleys whose width changes to vary the ratio. It is smooth and efficient but sensitive to heat and fluid condition, so early diagnosis can save the unit from a full replacement.

Signs you need cvt transmission repair
- Shudder or judder when pulling away gently from a stop
- A whine or drone that rises and falls with speed
- Revs that rise without matching acceleration, like a slipping belt
- Loss of power on hills, or the car limited to a low speed (fail-safe mode)
- A hot smell, or an over-temperature warning in traffic
- Fault codes referring to ratio, belt slip or pulley pressure
What usually causes it
Degraded or wrong CVT fluid
CVT fluid is not interchangeable with ordinary ATF. The belt relies on specific friction properties; old or incorrect fluid lets it slip and wears the pulley faces.
Overheating
A restricted or small fluid cooler lets the temperature climb in slow traffic or on hills. Heat breaks down the fluid and warps internal parts.
Worn belt and pulleys
Once the pulley surfaces are scored, the belt cannot grip evenly. This is a mechanical wear fault, normally needing a reconditioned or replacement unit.
Valve body, sensors and software
Pressure control solenoids, speed sensors and outdated control software can imitate mechanical failure. These are fixable without replacing the entire transmission.
How we do cvt transmission repair
- 1
Scan and fluid condition
We read the CVT codes and the fluid temperature and slip data, and check the fluid for burnt smell, colour and metallic glitter.
- 2
Road test under conditions that cause the fault
We reproduce the judder at low speed, on a hill and in warm conditions, because many CVT faults only appear when the unit is hot.
- 3
Software update and relearn
Where the manufacturer has released control software, we apply it. Learned values are reset after a fluid change or repair.
- 4
Mechanical repair or replacement
If the belt and pulleys are worn, we quote a reconditioned or replacement unit alongside the cost of the cooler flush needed to keep the new one alive.
By make and model
Nissan
Nissan's JATCO CVTs (found in models such as Altima, Sentra, Rogue and Murano from the late 2000s through the 2010s) have a documented history of judder and overheating, so fluid and software are checked first.
Mitsubishi / Subaru
Some CVT-equipped models from these makers show judder at low speed that is sometimes cured by fluid renewal with the correct specification.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
CVTs hate heat, and Dubai provides plenty: summer afternoons, stop-start traffic and mountain runs to Hatta or Jebel Jais all push fluid temperature up. If your CVT car has done high mileage in the city and never had its fluid changed, it deserves a check even if it feels fine today.
Questions about cvt transmission repair
Is the CVT fluid really changeable?
Yes, and manufacturers differ in their advice. Many owners benefit from changing it earlier than the book suggests, using only the exact fluid specified for the unit.
Can a CVT be repaired or must it be replaced?
Valve body, sensor and fluid faults are repairable. Worn belts and pulleys generally mean a reconditioned or replacement unit, which we quote clearly.
Is a judder dangerous?
Not instantly, but it signals wear that gets worse with use, and continued driving can turn a service-level fix into a unit replacement.
Can my CVT car be towed to you?
We arrange pickup and delivery. If the car cannot be driven, we say so in advance.
