Valve Body Repair & Replacement
The valve body is the hydraulic control centre of an automatic gearbox: a maze of channels, small valves and solenoids that decide which clutch gets fluid and when. Wear in it causes harsh, delayed or missed shifts without any damage to the gears themselves.

Signs you need valve body repair & replacement
- Gear changes that slam or bang, particularly 1-2 or 2-3
- Stuck in one gear, or reverse works and drive does not
- Flare between gears with no apparent clutch problem
- Limp mode with codes for solenoid circuits or pressure control
- Shift problems that appear only when the gearbox is hot
- Shifts that came right after a fluid change, then worsened
What usually causes it
Worn valve bores
Aluminium valve bodies wear where valves slide in and out thousands of times. Oversized bores leak pressure internally, giving soft or inconsistent shifts.
Debris and varnish
Clutch material or burnt fluid deposits make small valves stick. Cleaning can free them, but the contamination source must also be addressed.
Solenoid failure
Shift, pressure and lock-up solenoids can fail electrically or stick mechanically. Fault codes narrow it down to the exact solenoid in most cases.
Separator plate and gasket leaks
Worn or damaged separator plates and gaskets allow fluid to cross channels, making hydraulic pressures wrong.
How we do valve body repair & replacement
- 1
Check codes, pressure and fluid
Valve body trouble looks like clutch trouble, so line pressure is tested and the fluid and magnet are inspected for debris before parts are ordered.
- 2
Remove and strip the valve body
The pan comes off and the valve body is removed. On the bench, each valve and spring is cleaned, laid out in order and measured.
- 3
Replace solenoids, springs and gaskets
Worn parts are replaced, and where the bores are worn we fit oversized valves or a complete reconditioned or new valve body, depending on the model.
- 4
Refill, relearn and test
A new filter and fluid go in, adaptation values are reset and we road test. If debris was present, the cooler circuit is flushed as well.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Heat varnishes fluid, which makes valves sticky, and fine desert dust can reach a poorly sealed breather. Cars that regularly make long highway runs to Abu Dhabi and back through stop-start city traffic show valve wear that stays hidden until the gearbox is hot.
Questions about valve body repair & replacement
Is a new valve body always necessary?
No. Many are saved by cleaning and new solenoids, and we only recommend replacement if the bores are worn beyond use or a part is no longer available.
Can this fix a gearbox that slips?
If the slip is caused by low hydraulic pressure from the valve body, yes. If the clutches themselves are burnt, the repair will not work, and we say so after testing.
Why is the cooler flushed?
Debris that came from the valve body will otherwise return to the new parts. A flushed cooler and fresh filter give the repair its best chance of lasting.
Can I choose used parts?
A used valve body is the cheapest option, but its wear is unknown. The quote shows OEM, aftermarket and used alternatives, with the trade-off explained in plain terms.
How do you know the valve body is the problem and not the clutches?
We compare measured line pressure with the specification and check how pressure behaves in each gear. A clutch that leaks pressure shows a different pattern from a solenoid or valve that does not move, and the codes help confirm it.
Will shifting feel different afterwards?
It should feel firmer and more consistent, not sporty. The aim is to restore the factory behaviour, and adaptation values are reset so the computer starts learning from a healthy base.
