Torque Converter Repair

The torque converter is the fluid coupling that connects an automatic gearbox to the engine. It lets the engine idle while the car is stopped in gear and, at cruising speed, locks up like a clutch to save fuel. When it fails, the symptoms often feel like engine problems.

Signs you need torque converter repair

  • A shudder like driving over rumble strips at around 50 to 80 km/h under light throttle
  • The engine stalls or nearly stalls when you stop in Drive
  • Slipping or poor acceleration, with revs climbing without much speed
  • A whirring, rattling or grinding noise from the bell housing area
  • Gearbox overheating, with fluid that smells burnt
  • Fuel economy getting worse, since lock-up is no longer engaging

What usually causes it

Lock-up clutch wear

Inside the converter is a friction clutch that locks it above a certain speed. When its lining wears, it grabs unevenly and the car shudders. Old fluid speeds this up.

Stator one-way clutch failure

The stator multiplies torque at low speed. If its one-way clutch fails, the car feels weak pulling away, but is fine at higher speed.

Internal bearing or needle roller failure

A worn bearing gives a metallic whine or rattle, and metal fragments circulate into the rest of the gearbox.

Converter ballooning or overheating

Extreme heat can distort the housing or burn the clutch material, leaving the converter unable to transmit torque smoothly.

How we do torque converter repair

  1. 1

Separate converter from valve body or engine faults

We watch live lock-up slip speed on the scanner while driving. A shudder that appears exactly when the lock-up engages points to the converter or its fluid.

  2. 2

Try the cheap fix first, when sensible

For a mild shudder on a car with old fluid, a fluid and filter service sometimes cures it, so we try it before suggesting parts.

  3. 3

Remove the gearbox and the converter

If the converter is faulty, the gearbox comes out. The converter is replaced or rebuilt, and the front pump seal and bush are inspected while access is open.

  4. 4

    Flush the cooler and lines

Debris from a failed converter sits in the cooler lines. They are flushed or the cooler replaced so a new converter does not fail from the same contamination.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Long periods spent in slow traffic with the converter slipping, plus hot summer fluid, make lock-up clutch wear a Dubai specialty. A shudder noticed on the Emirates Road or E311 at steady speed is worth reporting early, while a fluid service might still resolve it.

Questions about torque converter repair

Is a shudder always the torque converter?

No. Engine misfires, worn engine mounts, driveshaft joints and tyre problems feel similar. We test each, so you do not pay for a gearbox removal that fixes nothing.

Can the converter be repaired?

Yes, specialist rebuilders can replace its internal clutch and bearings, and a new or reconditioned converter is an alternative. Quote prices reflect which is realistic for your model.

Why must the gearbox come out?

The converter sits between the engine and gearbox, so there is no access without separating them. That labour is the largest part of the bill, which is why we confirm the diagnosis first.

Will a stop-leak or additive help?

Additives promising to cure shudder rarely last. We do not offer them as a repair.

How long can I drive with a shuddering converter?

A mild shudder can be lived with for a short time, but the lock-up clutch material goes into the fluid and wears the gearbox. The sooner we look, the more likely a fluid service alone helps.

Does a new converter come with new fluid?

Yes. The gearbox is refilled with fresh fluid of the specified type and a new filter is fitted where there is one, so the new converter starts in clean surroundings.
