Gearbox Repair & Rebuild

A gearbox rebuild means removing the unit, stripping it down completely, replacing everything that is worn and putting it back together to specification. It suits cases where several internal parts are worn but the casing and main gears are still sound.

Signs you need gearbox repair & rebuild

  • Automatic that slips in more than one gear, or shifts with a bang
  • Manual gearbox that grinds when changing gear or jumps out of gear
  • Whining, growling or knocking from the gearbox in some gears or in neutral
  • Metal particles or paste on the magnet or in the pan
  • Leaking gearbox oil from the casing or the output shafts
  • Clutch problems in a manual that persist after a new clutch is fitted

What usually causes it

Worn clutches and bands (automatic)

After years of use, friction plates lose their lining. Once it is gone, clutches slip, heat up and shed debris that harms the pump and valve body.

Worn synchromesh rings (manual)

Synchros match gear speeds so changes are smooth. When the rings are worn, you hear a crunch and the gear fights back.

Bearing wear

Input, output and layshaft bearings wear over time or from low oil, causing whine that changes with load and speed.

Seal and bushing failure

Leaking seals lose pressure and oil, and worn bushings let shafts wander and damage gears.

How we do gearbox repair & rebuild

  1. 1

Confirm the problem is in the gearbox

Noises from wheel bearings, driveshafts or a clutch can mimic gearbox faults. We road test and scan before taking the unit out.

  2. 2

    Remove, strip and clean

The gearbox is removed and fully disassembled. Parts are cleaned and examined, and we show you what we find, including the damaged ones.

  3. 3

    Measure and replace

End play, clearances and gear teeth are measured. A rebuild kit of clutches, steels, seals, gaskets and bearings goes in, plus any gears or the filter as needed.

  4. 4

    Reassemble, refit and verify

After assembly and fluid fill, the gearbox is refitted, adaptations are reset and we road test through all gears, checking for leaks and noise.

Book gearbox repair & rebuild

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Cars driven hard in heavy traffic and on weekend desert or mountain trips rack up thermal cycles that wear clutches earlier than the odometer suggests. A gearbox that has run hot for years often shows the same pattern: darkened fluid, then slip in one gear, then several.

Questions about gearbox repair & rebuild

Is a rebuild better than a replacement?

Often cheaper and it keeps your original unit, which matches your car. When damage is severe, or the cost approaches that of a replacement, a swap may make more sense. The quote compares them.

Do you rebuild manual gearboxes too?

Yes. Manual rebuilds focus on synchros, bearings, seals and selector parts, and are usually quicker than automatics.

What parts do you use?

You choose OEM, aftermarket or used where used is sensible, for example casings or selected gears. The choice and the price of each part appear in writing.

How do I know the work was actually done?

Ask to see the worn parts. We keep replaced components on request so you can see for yourself what failed.

Can I keep driving while you wait for rebuild parts?

Only if the car is still safe, and we usually keep the gearbox apart once opened. We confirm that all the main parts are available before we strip the unit, so you are not left without a car for longer than needed.

How much of the cost is labour?

For most gearboxes a large part, because removal, stripping, cleaning and refitting take days even when the parts are cheap. The quote separates parts from labour so you can see where the money goes.
