Wheel Balancing Service

No tyre and wheel are perfectly even all the way round. Balancing spins each wheel on a machine, finds the heavy spot, and adds small weights opposite it so the wheel turns without wobbling. When it is wrong, you feel a vibration that grows with speed and wears tyres and suspension parts.

How we do wheel balancing service

  1. 1

    Inspect the wheel and tyre

Before spinning anything, we check the tyre for bulges, uneven wear and embedded objects, and the rim for bends, cracks and dried mud or old weights.

  2. 2

    Mount on the balancing machine

The wheel is mounted centred on the machine's shaft using the correct cone or adaptor, because a poorly centred wheel gives a wrong reading.

  3. 3

    Spin and read the imbalance

The machine spins the wheel and shows how much weight to add and where. Static and dynamic imbalance are corrected, so the wheel is steady in both directions.

  4. 4

    Fit weights and check

Clip-on or stick-on weights, depending on the rim, go in the indicated positions. The wheel is spun again to prove it reads zero, then refitted to the car with the nuts torqued to specification.

Signs it is time

  • Steering wheel shakes between about 80 and 120 km/h and calms down above or below that
  • A tremble through the seat or floor on the highway, not the steering wheel
  • Cupped or scalloped wear patterns on a tyre tread
  • New tyres were fitted recently and the car now shimmies
  • A weight fell off a rim, leaving a clean spot on the alloy
  • Vibration returned after hitting a pothole or kerb

What usually causes it

New or refitted tyres

Every time a tyre comes off a rim, the heavy point of the tyre and the heavy point of the rim must be matched again. Without a fresh balance, new tyres often vibrate.

Lost balance weights

Stick-on weights can fall off after a car wash, a harsh kerb scrape or because the rim was dirty when fitted. The wheel then goes out of balance suddenly.

Uneven tyre wear

As the tread wears unevenly, mass is lost from one side, and the balance changes. Rebalancing a worn tyre that has become out of true can help for only a while.

Mud, sand or dirt inside the rim

Material packed inside a steel or alloy wheel adds mass to one spot. Off-road trips can cause this, and cleaning the wheel solves it.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Long, fast roads such as the E311 and E611 make any imbalance obvious, since the car cruises at the exact speeds where it shows. Hot tarmac also softens tyres, and a wheel that was fine on a winter morning trembles in August, so the fix tends to be needed once temperatures rise.

Questions about wheel balancing service

How often does a car need balancing?

Whenever tyres are changed or repaired, and when a vibration appears. Many drivers also have it checked yearly or every 10,000 to 15,000 km.

Is balancing the same as alignment?

No. Balancing evens out the weight around each wheel. Alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels to the road. Vibration is usually balance; pulling and uneven wear are usually alignment.

Why is my car still vibrating after balancing?

There may be a bent wheel, a tyre defect, a worn suspension part or a brake issue. We test for these, and our vibration diagnosis page explains what we look for.

Can balancing be done at my house?

The balancing machine is in our workshop, so we offer pickup and delivery.
