Wheel Bearing Replacement

A wheel bearing lets the wheel spin freely on its hub with almost no friction. When it wears it hums, then growls, and a badly worn one can seize or loosen the wheel. We find which wheel is the problem, replace the bearing or hub unit and check that nothing else has been damaged.

Signs you need wheel bearing replacement

  • A humming or growling noise that rises and falls with road speed
  • The noise changes when you steer gently left and right
  • A rumble felt through the floor or the steering wheel
  • Play at the top and bottom of a raised wheel
  • An ABS or traction light, because the sensor reads the bearing
  • Uneven or scalloped wear on the tyre

What usually causes it

Normal wear and fatigue

A bearing is a set of hardened balls or rollers in a sealed race. After a high mileage the surfaces pit and the grease degrades, and the bearing starts to make noise even if it is still tight.

Water and dust getting past the seal

If the seal fails, dust and water wash out the grease and scour the race. Driving through standing water, or high-pressure washing near the hub, accelerates this.

Impact damage

A heavy hit on a kerb or a deep pothole can dent the race inside the bearing. The bearing may start to hum soon afterwards, even though it was fine before the impact.

Incorrect fitting or nut torque

Bearings need exact clamping force from the axle nut. Too tight overheats them, too loose lets them move. A bearing fitted by hammer rather than press can be damaged before it turns once.

How we do wheel bearing replacement

  1. 1

Road test to find the side

A bearing noise changes when load moves across the car. Swerving gently to the left loads the right-side bearing, so the sound quietens or grows, which helps us point to the side before lifting the car.

  2. 2

    Confirm on the lift

With the wheel raised, we spin it by hand, listen for roughness and check for play. This confirms the bearing and rules out brake drag, tyre wear or a driveshaft joint making a similar noise.

  3. 3

Replace the bearing or hub unit

Some cars use a pressed-in bearing, which needs the knuckle removed, and others use a bolt-on hub unit. Either way, the axle nut is torqued to specification, and nuts that are single-use are replaced.

  4. 4

    Check sensor, then road test

We refit and test the ABS sensor, since many bearings carry the encoder it reads. After a road test we confirm the noise has gone and no ABS code has been set.

Book wheel bearing replacement

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Heavy SUVs, wide wheels and sand driving all load wheel bearings more, and a hose-down of the underside after beach or desert trips can push water past the seals. A summer bearing hum is easy to confuse with tyre noise on hot asphalt, so we always confirm on the lift.

Questions about wheel bearing replacement

How do I tell a wheel bearing from tyre noise?

Tyre noise changes with the road surface, while bearing noise stays and changes with steering load. If a hum stays the same on smooth and rough tarmac and shifts when you swerve, suspect a bearing.

Is it dangerous to keep driving on a noisy bearing?

Not instantly, but wear progresses. A seriously worn bearing can overheat, damage the hub and, in the worst case, seize or let the wheel wobble. Do not leave it for months.

Should I replace both sides?

Not necessarily. A bearing on one side can fail alone. If the other side is of the same age and mileage we point it out, but we only replace what has tested as worn.

Will the ABS light come on with a failed bearing?

It can. Many bearings have a magnetic encoder ring, and when the bearing loosens the signal is erratic. Replacing the bearing normally clears the fault, which we confirm with a scan.
