ABS & Brake Warning Light Repair
The amber ABS light means the anti-lock system has switched itself off, while the ordinary brakes still work. A red BRAKE light is more serious and can mean low fluid or a pressure fault. We read the fault, confirm the failed part by measurement and repair it, rather than clearing the light and waiting for it to return.

Signs you need abs & brake warning light repair
- Amber ABS light on, either all the time or only on some journeys
- Red BRAKE light on while driving, with the handbrake fully down
- Traction control or stability control light on at the same time as ABS
- ABS pulsing or grinding at low speed when the road is dry
- Speedometer or cruise control that cuts out intermittently
- Warning light that appears after rain or a car wash and then clears
What usually causes it
Wheel speed sensor fault
Each wheel has a sensor that reads its speed. A sensor coated in metal dust, a damaged wire, or a loose connector gives a false or missing signal, and the module switches ABS off when one wheel disagrees with the rest.
Damaged tone ring or encoder
The sensor reads a toothed ring or a magnetic strip on the hub bearing. If the ring rusts, cracks or loses teeth, or the bearing wears out, the signal becomes irregular. Replacing only the sensor will not cure that.
ABS unit or control module
Inside the hydraulic unit are valves, a pump and the electronic module. Corroded connectors, a failed pump motor or a faulty valve block set stored codes, and repair can mean replacing the unit and coding it.
Other inputs: brake light switch, fluid level, voltage
The system also reads the brake light switch, steering angle, brake fluid level and battery voltage. A weak battery or a faulty pedal switch can set an ABS or stability warning without any fault in the ABS itself.
How we do abs & brake warning light repair
- 1
Read the codes
We scan the ABS module and the other modules it talks to, record the stored codes and freeze-frame, and note whether the red or amber light is showing. A red light with a soft pedal means do not drive.
- 2
Compare live wheel speeds
With the scan tool we watch all four wheel speeds on a drive. The wheel that drops out or reads erratically identifies the circuit, and we then measure the sensor and wiring on that corner.
- 3
Inspect and repair
We inspect the sensor, connector, tone ring and hub bearing, and repair the wiring or replace the failed part. Where the hydraulic unit has failed, the quote lists the options and what each involves.
- 4
Clear, test and confirm
Codes are cleared and the car is driven at different speeds so the ABS performs its self-check. We confirm the light stays off, and if a wheel bearing or brake fluid fault was behind it, that is repaired first.
By make and model
Mercedes-Benz
Some 2002 to 2006 E-Class, CLS and SL models use an electro-hydraulic brake system, and a brake warning on these usually points to the hydraulic unit and needs specialist diagnosis rather than a simple sensor swap.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Fine dust and brake dust cling to magnetic wheel speed sensors, and the combination of heat and strong summer humidity corrodes the small connectors behind each wheel. Cars that have been driven through standing water after a rare heavy storm often come in with an ABS light that was fine the day before.
Questions about abs & brake warning light repair
Is it safe to keep driving with the ABS light lit?
The normal brakes should still work, but the car will lock wheels in an emergency stop and stability control may be off. Treat it as a repair to book soon. A red brake light with a soft pedal is different: do not drive.
Will it fail the RTA test?
A lit ABS or brake warning light can be a reason for failure. It is best repaired first.
Can a wheel bearing cause an ABS light?
Yes. A worn bearing lets the wheel wobble, which changes the sensor gap and signal. We check for play whenever a sensor code points to one wheel.
Will clearing the code fix it?
Only temporarily. A fault with a real cause will set the code again, often within a few drives, so we repair the part that set it rather than just wiping the memory.
Does the ABS unit have to be replaced?
Rarely, and only after measurement shows that the unit itself has failed. Most ABS lights come from wheel sensors, wiring or bearings, which cost far less than the hydraulic unit.
