Brake Disc Replacement & Skimming
A brake disc, also called a rotor, is the surface the pads clamp. Over time it wears thinner, scores, and can develop uneven thickness that you feel as a shudder under braking. We measure first. A disc with enough metal left can be skimmed flat, and one without is replaced.

Signs you need brake disc replacement & skimming
- Steering wheel or pedal shakes when braking from speed
- A rhythmic pulse through the pedal that follows wheel speed
- Deep grooves or a raised lip around the outer edge of the disc
- Blue or dark discoloured patches on the disc surface
- Grinding that continues after the pads were changed
- Rust on the disc face that does not wipe off after a few stops
What usually causes it
Uneven disc thickness
What most people call a warped disc is usually a disc whose thickness varies by a few hundredths of a millimetre around its circumference. The pads grab harder at the thick spots, and the pedal pulses.
Pad material deposited unevenly
If the car is held on the brake pedal while the discs are very hot, pad material can stick in one patch of the disc. That patch grips differently and starts the pulsing, even though the disc is straight.
Wear below the minimum
Every disc has a minimum thickness stamped on it. Below it, the disc cannot absorb heat safely, and it can crack. A disc at or near the limit cannot be skimmed and has to be replaced.
Hub runout or loose wheel nuts
A disc that wobbles slightly on the hub touches the pad on one side each rotation, causing wear in a pattern. Uneven wheel nut tightening can distort the disc in the same way.
How we do brake disc replacement & skimming
- 1
Measure thickness and runout
With the wheel off, we measure disc thickness at several points against the stamped minimum and check how far the disc wobbles on the hub. The numbers decide whether it is skimmed or replaced.
- 2
Skim or replace
A disc with enough thickness is machined flat and parallel. If the cut would take it below minimum, we quote new discs. Discs are replaced as a pair on the same axle, never one at a time.
- 3
Fit with new pads
New or skimmed discs work best with new pads, because old pads carry the old disc's wear pattern. The hub face is cleaned first, since rust or dirt behind the disc is a common cause of runout.
- 4
Torque and bed in
Wheel nuts are tightened to specification in a star pattern. We then bed in the discs and pads with a series of moderate stops so the friction layer forms evenly.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Hard braking from 120 km/h on the E311 and E11 puts a lot of heat into the discs, and a hot disc that is then parked or washed can mark unevenly. Short drives in humid weather also leave a film of rust on the disc face overnight, which usually wears off in a few stops but can mislead owners into thinking something is wrong.
Questions about brake disc replacement & skimming
Is skimming cheaper than replacing?
Usually yes, but only when the disc has enough metal left. Skimming removes material, so the discs get thinner each time. If a skim would leave the disc under its stamped minimum, replacement is the safer job.
Why does the steering wheel shake only when I brake?
Because the shake comes from the front discs or pads, not from the wheels. If it also shakes while cruising, the cause is more likely wheel balance, which is a different job.
Do I have to change both sides?
Yes. Discs wear as a pair, and one new disc beside an old one gives different braking force, so the car can pull to one side. Both sides on the axle are done together.
Can I upgrade the discs?
You can ask for a different disc type on the quote, and we will check that it fits your car and calipers. Standard discs to the original specification are what most owners choose.
