Power Steering Pump Repair

On hydraulic power steering, a belt-driven pump supplies the fluid pressure that makes the wheel light to turn. When the pump wears, leaks or takes in air, the steering whines and goes heavy. We find whether the pump, a hose or the fluid is at fault and fix that.

Signs you need power steering pump repair

  • A whining or groaning noise that rises when you turn the wheel
  • Steering that is heavy until the engine warms up
  • Power steering fluid that looks foamy or milky
  • Fluid on the pump, the belt or on the ground below
  • A squeal when turning the wheel to full lock
  • Steering that is intermittently heavy and then normal again

What usually causes it

Low or aerated fluid

A leak somewhere in the system lowers the level, and the pump starts to suck air. Air bubbles make the fluid foam and the pump whine, and the noise stops once the leak is fixed and the system bled.

Worn pump

Inside the pump, vanes or rollers press against a cam ring. Wear lets pressure leak back, so the steering feels weak at idle, when the engine is turning slowest and the pump produces least.

Leaking pump shaft seal or hoses

The seal where the pulley shaft enters the pump can fail and weep fluid onto the belt. High-pressure hoses crack at the crimped ends. A hose leak is cheaper to fix than a pump, so we check it first.

Slipping or loose drive belt

If the belt that turns the pump is glazed, cracked or loose, it slips under load and the assist drops. A squeal at full lock with a healthy pump usually points to the belt.

How we do power steering pump repair

  1. 1

    Check fluid and listen

We inspect fluid level, colour and foaming, and listen to the pump at idle and at full lock. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid shows the pump or rack has been running hot.

  2. 2

    Pressure and leak test

With the engine running, we trace the hoses, fittings and pump seals for leaks, and check the drive belt and pulley. On some cars a pressure gauge is used to test whether the pump makes proper pressure.

  3. 3

    Repair or replace the pump

A leaking hose is replaced, or the pump is changed if its output is weak or its seal has failed. The quote shows OEM, aftermarket and used options. The reservoir and hoses are flushed to remove debris.

  4. 4

    Fill and bleed

The system is filled with the fluid your car specifies, and air is bled out by turning the wheel lock to lock with the engine off, then on. We confirm the noise has gone and nothing leaks.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Idling in traffic and slow-speed parking manoeuvres in hot weather ask a lot of a power steering pump, and steering fluid is often forgotten at service time. Heat darkens the fluid and hardens hoses, so a car here with a whine in summer is often the first sign of a seal that has started to weep.

Questions about power steering pump repair

Does my car even have a power steering pump?

Many newer cars use electric steering with no pump and no fluid. If yours has a fluid reservoir under the bonnet with a steering wheel symbol on the cap, it is hydraulic and this page applies.

Can I just top up the fluid?

As a short-term step, yes, with the correct type. But the fluid does not get used up, so a falling level means a leak, and the topping-up only delays the repair.

Is a flush part of the repair?

If the pump has worn, metal particles travel through the system, so we flush it when a pump is replaced. This protects the new pump and the rack from the debris.

Which fluid does my car use?

It varies: some use a special power steering fluid and some use automatic transmission fluid. Using the wrong one can swell the seals, so we check the cap and handbook before we fill.
