Belt & Hose Inspection
Rubber parts under the bonnet fail without much warning, and heat is their enemy. A failed drive belt can stop the water pump, alternator and power steering at once, and a burst coolant hose can overheat an engine within minutes. Both are simple to check.

How we do belt & hose inspection
- 1
Look at the belts under light
Cracks across the ribs, glazing, fraying, missing chunks and uneven wear are all signs, and we use a gauge where the belt type allows.
- 2
Check tensioners and pulleys
With the belt off or by spinning pulleys, we listen for roughness and look for play or misalignment.
- 3
Squeeze and inspect every hose
Radiator hoses, heater hoses and vacuum lines are checked for softness, swelling, cracking and wetness at the clamps. Cold, the engine is safe to touch.
- 4
Recommend and replace what is due
We give you a short list ranked by risk. Timing belts, where fitted, are handled by the maker's replacement schedule, not by looks alone.
Signs it is time
- A squeal on start-up or when the air conditioning comes on
- A chirping or flapping noise from the front of the engine
- A coolant smell or small drips under the front of the car after parking
- Hoses that feel spongy, hard or swollen when squeezed cold
- The battery light flickering or heavy steering, which can indicate a slipping belt
What usually causes it
Heat hardens rubber
Belts glaze and crack on the ribbed side. Hoses go brittle on the outside and soft inside, which is the opposite of what you can see.
Tension and pulley problems
A weak tensioner or a pulley with a rough bearing wears a belt quickly and makes noise long before it breaks.
Oil and coolant contamination
A leak that drips onto a belt softens it and makes it slip. Hose ends corrode at clamps, causing weeps.
Age, regardless of mileage
A car with low mileage can have old rubber, particularly if it has stood still in the sun for long periods.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Cooling hoses on a car in the UAE work in conditions where the coolant is already close to its limit for weeks at a time, so one marginal hose can be enough to cause a roadside overheat. A belt-driven air conditioning compressor adds load for most of the year. We advise replacing hoses and belts as a set when one has failed, as the others are the same age and have faced the same heat. If you have just had an engine wash, tell us, because water and degreaser can make a belt squeal for a day or two and mislead a quick check.
Questions about belt & hose inspection
Can I tell when a belt needs replacing?
Cracks, glaze and noise are signs, but a belt can look fine and still be near the end of its life. A technician checks tension and wear more reliably.
Is the timing belt part of this?
It is inside the engine cover. We look at it only when covers are off, and its replacement follows the maker's interval. Ask us for your car's figure.
What does a belt failure feel like?
Sudden loss of power steering, a battery warning and a rising temperature gauge. Stop safely and call for help.
Can this be part of another service?
Yes, it is included in our major service inspection and can be added to any other visit.
How often should belts and hoses be replaced?
There is no single figure. Many drive belts last several years, but heat shortens that, so we judge by condition and the maker's guidance.
Is a noisy belt always worn?
Not always. A belt that squeals may simply be loose, contaminated or running over a failing pulley. We find out which before you buy anything.
