Transmission Oil & Filter Change
Gearbox oil is a scheduled service item, just like engine oil, though it is often skipped because the car still drives well. Replacing it, with the filter where there is one, removes worn additives and fine wear metal before they harm clutches, valves and bearings.

How we do transmission oil & filter change
- 1
Find out what your unit needs
Gearboxes use different oils: stepped automatics, CVTs and twin-clutch units each have their own specification. We look up the exact code and agree the oil with you.
- 2
Drain, inspect and clean
The old oil is drained and judged by colour and smell. Where there is a pan, we remove it, clean the magnet and fit a new filter and pan gasket.
- 3
Refill to the correct level
Many gearboxes are checked through a level plug at a stated oil temperature, which we read with a scanner. Filling by volume alone is not accurate enough.
- 4
Test drive and record
The car is driven through the gears while hot, the level and leaks are rechecked, and we note the oil specification and mileage for your records.
Signs it is time
- The service schedule lists a gearbox oil change and it has been missed
- Shifts have become slightly slower or less smooth than when the car was new
- Dark fluid that smells scorched when checked
- You tow, carry heavy loads or drive in constant heavy traffic
- You are buying or selling the car and want a service history
- The gearbox was described as sealed for life, and you would like it looked at anyway
What usually causes it
Additive depletion
The friction modifiers that give smooth, grip-without-slip shifts are used up over time. Without them, clutches either shudder or slip.
Accumulated wear material
Fine clutch and metal particles circulate in the oil and abrade the valve body. The filter, if there is one, only catches part of this.
Thermal ageing
Stop-start traffic keeps the oil hot, and each rise in temperature shortens its life. Sealed units in particular age quietly because nobody checks them.
Wrong fluid used previously
Using a general ATF where the gearbox needs a specific type causes shift problems that a correct fluid service can improve.
By make and model
Volkswagen / Audi
DSG dual-clutch gearboxes have service intervals for the oil and filter, which owners often miss because the car seems fine until shift quality declines.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Treat Dubai driving as severe service for gearboxes. Constant slow traffic, parking-lot ramps and summer afternoons keep gearbox oil hot for hours a day, so a mid-way service at about 50,000 km is cheap insurance for a sealed unit that the maker calls lifetime-filled.
Questions about transmission oil & filter change
Is this different from the gearbox repair service?
This is routine maintenance on a gearbox that works. If you already have slipping, harsh shifts or warnings, a diagnosis comes first, and you will find that on our transmission repair pages.
Does the gearbox oil really never need changing?
Sealed for life usually means the life of the warranty, not of the car. Many technicians recommend a service at a moderate interval, particularly in hot climates.
Can an old gearbox be harmed by a fluid change?
If the unit is already worn, fresh oil does not make it worse in itself. We check for existing slip before servicing, and tell you if a change will not help.
How much oil will it take?
Anything from about 4 litres for a simple drain-and-fill up to 8 or more for a full exchange. Our quote states the quantity and type.
