Coolant Flush & Replacement

Coolant is more than water: it carries heat from the engine, raises the boiling point and contains inhibitors that stop corrosion inside the radiator and block. Those inhibitors are used up over time, so the coolant must be renewed on schedule to keep the engine cool and the metal protected.

How we do coolant flush & replacement

  1. 1

    Check the old coolant

We measure the freeze and boil protection with a refractometer and look at colour, particles and smell. Oil or exhaust gas in the coolant would point to a bigger problem.

  2. 2

    Pressure-test the system

Before draining, we pressurise the cooling system to check hoses, radiator, water pump and cap hold pressure. Any weak point is quoted before it fails.

  3. 3

    Drain, flush and refill

The coolant is drained from the radiator and block where possible, the system is flushed with clean water, then refilled with a premixed coolant of the type specified for your engine.

  4. 4

    Bleed and test

Air is purged through the bleed points and the engine is run to temperature with the heater on. The thermostat opening, fan operation and final level are checked.

Book coolant flush & replacement

Signs it is time

  • Coolant has turned brown, rusty or oily instead of its original bright colour
  • Temperature gauge is climbing in traffic more than it used to
  • Sludge or flakes visible in the expansion tank
  • Heater blows lukewarm even with the engine hot
  • Coolant has not been renewed for four or five years, or no one knows when
  • A recent repair involved opening the cooling system

What usually causes it

Used-up corrosion inhibitors

The additive pack depletes after years of heat cycles. Without it, aluminium parts corrode and the water pump, radiator and heater core are at risk.

Mixing incompatible coolants

Different coolant chemistries can react and form gel or sludge that clogs narrow passages. We identify what is in the system before adding anything.

Scale and debris

Using tap water over time deposits minerals in the radiator, restricting flow and cooling capacity.

Air or low level after repairs

A system that is not bled properly keeps an air pocket that cools poorly and gives false temperature readings.

By make and model

BMW / Mercedes-Benz

These makes specify particular coolant approvals, often a different type from other brands, and mixing them with a generic coolant is a common mistake.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

In the UAE, the freeze protection in coolant is irrelevant but its high boiling point and corrosion protection are essential. With air temperatures above 45 degrees and the AC adding heat load at the front of the car, a worn-out coolant leaves little safety margin before the gauge climbs.

Questions about coolant flush & replacement

Can I top up with water?

In an emergency yes, but not as a habit. Water dilutes the corrosion protection and lowers the boiling point. Premixed coolant of the right type is the correct top-up.

How often should coolant be changed?

Check the handbook, which may say between two and five years or more depending on the coolant type. Heat-stressed engines are better off at the shorter end.

What colour should it be?

Colour varies by type, and you cannot choose by colour alone. We test the coolant and match the specification for your engine.

Will a flush fix overheating?

Only if old coolant or scale was the cause. A faulty fan, thermostat or a leak needs its own repair, and our overheating page explains how we find them.

Is a coolant change needed after a repair?

Often yes. If the system was drained for a hose, pump or radiator replacement, we refill with fresh premix and bleed it, rather than reusing coolant that has been standing in a container.
