Engine Overheating Repair

An engine that overheats is losing the fight to move heat out of the block, and every extra minute of driving raises the chance of a warped cylinder head. We find why the coolant is not circulating or cooling, then repair the cause rather than topping up and hoping.

Signs you need engine overheating repair

  • Temperature needle above the middle or a red coolant warning in the cluster
  • Steam or a sweet smell from under the bonnet after you stop
  • Coolant reservoir empty again a few days after you filled it
  • Heater blowing cold while the engine is hot
  • The engine loses power or pings when the gauge is high
  • Overheating only in traffic, improving once you are moving at speed

What usually causes it

Coolant leak

Rubber hoses harden in heat, plastic radiator end tanks crack where they meet the aluminium core, and water pump seals weep through a small drain hole. A pressure tester finds seeps that only open when the system is hot.

Cooling fan not working

If the engine overheats at idle but not at speed, suspect the electric fan, its relay or a fan control module. At speed, air pushed through the grille does the fan's job.

Thermostat stuck closed

The thermostat holds coolant back until the engine warms up. When it jams shut, the upper radiator hose stays cool while the gauge runs away, a quick check for the technician.

Blocked radiator or air in the system

Dust and debris packed between the condenser and radiator fins, or scale inside the tubes, cut heat transfer. An airlock after a poor refill traps a steam pocket round the temperature sensor.

How we do engine overheating repair

  1. 1

    Safe inspection

We never open a hot cap. Once cool, we check coolant level and colour, oil cap for milky residue, and hoses and belts for damage.

  2. 2

    Pressure test

The cooling system is pressurised with a hand pump to about the cap rating. Drips, a falling needle or coolant at the water pump weep hole show where it escapes.

  3. 3

    Component tests

Fan operation is commanded with a scanner, the thermostat opening temperature is verified, and a chemical block test checks the coolant for exhaust gas from a failing head gasket.

  4. 4

    Repair and bleed

Failed parts are replaced, the radiator is flushed if needed, and the system is refilled with the coolant type your manufacturer specifies and bled of air. We road test until the temperature holds steady.

Book engine overheating repair

By make and model

BMW

Many BMW models use plastic cooling parts, including expansion tanks and thermostat housings, that become brittle with age and heat and are a frequent cause of coolant loss.

Mercedes-Benz

Several Mercedes engines use plastic coolant flanges and connectors that crack over time; a pressure test usually shows the weeping joint.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

At 45 degrees or more, the cooling system has almost no margin. Cars that idle in a queue with the AC on can overheat when a fan is slowing down or the radiator is half clogged by sand, a problem rarely seen in cooler countries. If the gauge rises, turn the AC off, heater on full, and stop somewhere safe.

Questions about engine overheating repair

Can I keep driving a short distance if it is overheating?

No. A few minutes of driving with a gauge in the red can warp the head or blow the gasket, turning a repair of a few hundred dirhams into a major rebuild. Stop, let it cool and call us.

Is adding water enough?

Only as an emergency measure. Plain water lacks corrosion protection and boils at a lower point than the correct mix, and it does nothing about why the coolant left.

How do I know it is the head gasket and not a hose?

A chemical test of the coolant detects combustion gas, and a pressure test shows whether pressure rises with no external leak. Both are done before you commit to an expensive job.
