Windshield Seal Replacement
The seal around a windscreen keeps water out and holds the trim in place. On cars with a bonded screen, the main sealing is the adhesive itself, and the visible rubber or plastic moulding is the finishing strip. Which one has failed decides the repair.

Signs you need windshield seal replacement
- A whistling or rushing noise from the top or sides of the windscreen at speed
- Water trickling down the A-pillar or dripping from the headlining after rain or a wash
- A rubber strip that has shrunk, lifted at the corners or come loose
- Rust bubbling in the paint at the base of the screen
- Condensation or mould smell inside the car after wet weather
- A fine whistle that only appears above a certain speed and goes away when you tape the gap
What usually causes it
Rubber hardened by heat
The moulding dries and shrinks away from the glass, so wind and water find the gap. This happens on every car in time, sooner in strong sun.
Adhesive bond failure
Where a previous replacement was done with poor preparation or the wrong adhesive, there are gaps in the bond line, which let in water or air.
Rust under the edge
A leak lets water attack the metal edge, which then lifts the adhesive from below and makes the leak bigger.
Accident flexing
A front impact can twist the body slightly, opening a gap in the bond that was fine before.
How we do windshield seal replacement
- 1
Find where the leak is
We run a water test, with someone inside, and use smoke or an air probe to find the gap. Water often enters a long way from where it appears.
- 2
Decide: trim or full re-bed
If only the visible moulding has failed, it is replaced. If the adhesive is the problem, the glass has to come out and be re-bonded.
- 3
Treat rust and clean the bond line
Any corrosion at the frame is removed, the metal is primed, and the old adhesive is cut back.
- 4
Refit and retest
A new bead and moulding are fitted, and the water test is repeated to confirm the leak is gone before the car goes back to you.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Moulding and rubber seals live in extremes here: blazing sun for most of the year, then occasional heavy rain and car washes with pressure jets. A seal that looked fine in winter can be shrunken and cracked after one summer. If you notice a whistle in the first cool months of the year, deal with it before the rare heavy rain finds the gap and soaks the carpets. After a seal repair, avoid high-pressure jets aimed directly at the windscreen edge for a few days.
Questions about windshield seal replacement
Can the trim strip simply be glued back?
Sometimes, as a short-term fix. If the rubber has shrunk, it will lift again, so a new strip is the lasting repair.
Does a leaking windscreen mean a new windscreen?
Not always. Re-bedding the existing glass often works, as long as the glass is undamaged and the frame is clean.
Why do I smell damp?
Water gets into the carpets and insulation. We check and recommend drying and, if needed, treatment for mould.
Is it covered by insurance?
Usually not, unless it follows an accident. Check your policy.
How can I tell whether the leak is the windscreen or something else?
If water appears at the top corner of the dashboard or down the A-pillar only when it hits the front of the car, the screen is the likely entry. A wet floor in the boot points to another source, and we test each area.
Can a worn seal cause rust?
Yes. Water that sits at the glass edge corrodes the body metal, which is why we recommend fixing the seal before the paint starts to bubble.
