Headlight Polish & Restoration
Most modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate plastic with a thin protective coating. Sun strips that coating, the plastic oxidises and the lens turns yellow and cloudy, so less light reaches the road. Restoration removes the damaged surface and seals the lens, usually for a fraction of the cost of new lamps.

How we do headlight polish & restoration
- 1
Clean and mask
The lights are cleaned, and the surrounding paint and trim are masked off to protect them from the abrasive stages.
- 2
Wet sand through grades
Starting with a grade coarse enough to remove the oxidised layer, we progress through finer papers until the lens has an even matte finish with no pits remaining.
- 3
Polish to clarity
A machine polish with a plastic-safe compound brings the lens back to transparent. We inspect under a lamp to confirm no haze remains inside the sanded area.
- 4
Seal against UV
A UV-resistant clear coating or sealant is applied to replace the lost factory layer. Without it, the lens would yellow again within months.
Why restore your headlights
- Lenses that look yellow, brown or milky even after washing
- Dimmer beam, particularly at night on unlit roads
- A rough, chalky feel to the outside of the lens
- Hairline cracks or crazing in the lens surface
- Failing a headlight test because the beam output is poor
- Car otherwise in good shape but looks tired because of the front lights
What usually causes it
UV damage to the factory coating
The clear hard-coat on the lens is a thin layer. Under constant sun it cracks and peels, and the exposed plastic below oxidises quickly.
Heat from the bulb
Halogen bulbs and enclosed housings run hot, accelerating the ageing of the plastic from the inside out.
Abrasion from sand and road debris
Wind-blown sand at speed sandblasts the lens slowly, leaving a frosted surface that scatters light.
Harsh cleaners and wax
Solvent-based cleaners, abrasive polishes and some waxes strip what is left of the original coating.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Headlights that have spent years facing the sun in open car parks are usually in worse shape than the paint around them. Since fast, unlit roads between emirates give you only your own headlights, a clear lens is a safety matter, and restoration is a sensible pre-test step for older cars.
Questions about headlight polish & restoration
Can every headlight be restored?
Most can. Lenses with cracks, water inside the housing, or damage on the inner surface cannot be fixed by polishing and need a new lamp. We tell you which applies before we start.
How long will the result last?
It depends on the sealant used and where the car is parked. A proper UV sealant gives a long period of clarity, but cars parked in the sun year-round will eventually need a refresh.
Are toothpaste and DIY kits worth it?
Quick fixes without sanding and a UV sealant clear the haze for a short while, then it returns quickly. The sealant stage is the part that makes the result last.
Does it help with the RTA inspection?
A clearer lens improves beam output, which helps, but the lights must also be aimed and working correctly. See our electrical page for lamp repairs.
Do you restore tail lights and fog lights too?
Yes, where the lens is plastic and the damage is on the outside surface. The process is the same, though tail light lenses usually show less UV damage than headlights.
Can I drive straight away?
Yes. Once the sealant has cured, which we confirm before handing the car back, the lamps are ready to use. Avoid pressure washing the lenses for the first few days.
