If an automatic car will not shift out of Park, the cause is often the brake pedal switch or the shift lock, not the gearbox itself. If it shifts but will not drive, think low transmission fluid, a broken cable or an internal fault. In a manual, a clutch that does not release fully is the most common reason gears will not go in. Do not force the lever; forcing it can turn a small fault into a gearbox repair.
Why won't my automatic car shift out of Park?
Automatic cars have a shift lock. It stops the lever leaving Park until you press the brake. If the car does not see the brake pedal pressed, the lever stays locked. Common causes:
- Brake light switch fault. The same switch tells the car you are braking. Ask someone to check whether your brake lights come on. If they do not, this is a strong clue.
- Blown fuse for the brake lights or the shift lock.
- Shift lock solenoid failure. The small electric lock in the gear selector does not release.
- A spill in the centre console. Coffee or soft drinks can jam the selector mechanism.
- The car parked on a steep slope with weight resting on the parking pawl. Press the brake firmly, then shift. In future, set the handbrake before shifting into Park.
Many cars have a shift lock release, often a small slot or button near the gear lever, described in the owner's manual. It lets you move the lever in an emergency. Use it to move the car, not as a long-term fix, and check that the brake lights work before you drive, because the same fault can stop drivers behind you seeing that you are braking.
Why does my automatic go into gear but not move?
If the lever moves into Drive or Reverse and the engine revs, but the car does not move, or moves weakly:
- Low or burnt transmission fluid. Automatic gearboxes work on fluid pressure. A leak or very old fluid can mean no drive, slipping or late shifts. Look for red or brown spots under the car.
- Broken or stretched shift cable. The lever moves but the gearbox does not. The dashboard may show a different gear from the one you selected.
- Limp mode. If the gearbox computer detects a fault, it may hold the car in one gear to protect itself. A warning light usually comes on.
- Valve body or solenoid faults. These control which gear is engaged. Symptoms come and go before they get worse.
- Torque converter or internal wear. Usually with shudder, slipping or noise beforehand.
CVT gearboxes, fitted to many popular cars in the UAE, have their own fluid and their own failure patterns. They need the correct fluid and a technician who knows them; our CVT transmission repair covers them.
Why won't my manual car go into gear?
In a manual, the clutch has to disconnect the engine from the gearbox before a gear can go in. If it does not fully disconnect, gears grind or refuse to engage.
- Clutch hydraulics. Most manuals use a clutch master and slave cylinder with fluid. A leak or air in the system means the pedal goes down but the clutch does not fully release. A soft or sinking pedal is the clue.
- Worn clutch or pressure plate. A worn clutch more often slips than sticks, but some faults stop it releasing cleanly.
- Worn synchronisers. Grinding when changing into one particular gear, often second or third, points to the synchros inside the gearbox.
- Shift cable or linkage. A worn bush or loose cable makes the lever vague or stops it reaching a gear.
- Low gearbox oil from a leak, which makes shifts notchy and wears parts.
If the car will not go into any gear with the engine running but does with the engine off, the clutch is not releasing.
What can I check before calling a workshop?
- Press the brake firmly before shifting out of Park, and check that the brake lights come on.
- Check the dashboard for a gearbox warning, a check engine light or a message about the selector.
- Look under the car for fresh fluid spots, and note their colour.
- Try with the engine off (manual): if gears go in easily with the engine off but not with it running, suspect the clutch.
- Note when it happens. Only when hot after a long drive in traffic? Only in the morning? Only in Reverse? These details save diagnosis time.
Do not keep forcing the lever or revving the engine to make a gear engage. That is how a cable or clutch fault becomes internal gearbox damage.
Is it safe to drive or tow the car?
If the car is stuck in gear, will not select Drive or is in limp mode, do not try to drive it a long way. Do not let anyone tow it with the driven wheels on the ground either. Without the engine running, an automatic gearbox gets no oil pressure, and spinning it can damage it. A flatbed lifts all four wheels off the road. See our breakdown recovery and towing service; the recovery fee is agreed before the truck is sent.
What does the repair involve and cost?
It depends on the cause. A brake light switch or a shift cable is a small job. An internal fault is a bigger one. Typical starting points:
- Automatic transmission repair from AED 499
- Transmission fluid change from AED 299, where the fluid is the problem and the gearbox is otherwise healthy
- Clutch replacement from AED 899 for manual cars
We start by reading gearbox fault codes, checking the fluid and testing the selector, cable and switches. Diagnosis is free if you go ahead with the repair with us. If you decide not to repair, the diagnosis is charged at the amount on your quote.
Your written quote lists the cause, the parts and the price before any work starts. You choose OEM, aftermarket or used parts where they are available, each with its price. Repairs are done at our workshop. Pickup and delivery is available across Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. Selected items carry a warranty of 6 months or 10,000 km, whichever comes first, and your quote shows which items are covered.
Is your car refusing to go into gear?
Tell us whether it is automatic, CVT or manual, what the lever does and any warning on the dashboard. We reply from 9 AM to 10 PM, usually within 30 minutes. See our transmission repair service or book online.
