Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Cleaning

A diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust and burns it off in a process called regeneration. If the car is never driven in a way that lets it regenerate, the filter fills up, the warning light appears and the car may drop into limp mode. We clear the soot where possible and find out why the filter blocked.

Signs you need diesel particulate filter (dpf) cleaning

  • A DPF or filter warning light on the dashboard
  • The car going into limp mode with reduced power
  • Fuel use rising for no clear reason
  • The cooling fan running after you have switched off the engine
  • Engine oil level rising, with a smell of diesel on the dipstick
  • Regeneration attempts that start and are interrupted again and again

What usually causes it

Short and slow journeys

Regeneration needs the exhaust to be hot for several minutes, which a drive at steady speed provides. Repeated short trips or stop-start crawling never get it hot enough, so soot builds up.

Faulty injectors, EGR or boost leaks

Anything that makes the engine produce extra soot loads the filter faster. A sticking EGR valve, leaking injector or a split turbo hose can all be behind a filter that keeps blocking.

Failed sensors

A pressure sensor measures the difference across the filter, and temperature sensors guide the regeneration. A false reading can stop regeneration or trigger it constantly, so we test these before touching the filter.

Ash build-up

Soot burns off, but ash from the engine oil does not. Over a long distance the ash fills the filter permanently, which cleaning can partly restore and which in time calls for replacement.

How we do diesel particulate filter (dpf) cleaning

  1. 1

Scan and read the soot load

We read the filter data and codes, including the pressure across the filter, the soot load and the number of regenerations. This tells us whether the filter is only full or is also failing.

  2. 2

    Fix faults that blocked it

Sensors, the EGR valve, injectors and boost leaks are tested first. Cleaning a filter on a car that goes on producing too much soot only buys a few weeks.

  3. 3

    Forced regeneration or cleaning

If the soot load allows it, we start a regeneration with the scan tool and run the engine under supervision. A filter that is too blocked is removed and cleaned, or replaced if cracked or melted.

  4. 4

    Reset, drive and advise

After refitting we reset the learned values, road test and check the soot reading is back to normal. We also check you are using the correct low-ash oil, and advise on the drive pattern that keeps it clear.

Book diesel particulate filter (dpf) cleaning

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Diesel pickups and SUVs in the cities often do short school or shop runs at low speed, exactly the pattern that stops regeneration. A weekly run at steady speed on the E311 or E611 usually keeps the filter clear. We do not advise removing the filter, since it is part of the car's emission equipment.

Questions about diesel particulate filter (dpf) cleaning

Does my car have a DPF?

Most modern diesel cars do. Petrol cars generally do not. The handbook, a DPF warning symbol or the scan will tell us, and if the car has one, we check its condition as part of any diesel power-loss fault.

Can I clear the light by driving?

Sometimes. A long steady drive with the engine under moderate load can complete a regeneration. If the light returns, the filter is too full or there is a fault, and driving more will not help.

Why does my oil level rise?

During a regeneration, extra fuel is injected late in the cycle, and some of it runs down the cylinder walls into the sump. Repeated interrupted regenerations can dilute the oil, so we check it and change it if needed.

Is cleaning better than replacing?

If the filter is intact, cleaning costs far less than a new one. If the core is cracked or melted, or the ash cannot be removed, replacement is the right answer. We tell you after inspection.
