Turbocharger Repair
A turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin a turbine at very high speed and force extra air into the engine. When it fails you lose power and sometimes get smoke, but a lot of boost problems are actually hoses or actuators. We test the whole system before recommending a turbo.

Signs you need turbocharger repair
- Noticeable loss of power, especially under load or overtaking
- A siren-like whine or whistle that rises with revs
- Blue-grey smoke from the exhaust
- Engine oil consumption increasing
- Limp mode with underboost or overboost codes
- Oil in the intercooler or intake pipework
What usually causes it
Oil starvation or contaminated oil
The turbo shaft spins on a thin film of oil and can exceed 150,000 rpm. Old, sludged or low oil scores the bearings quickly, so many failures trace back to missed services.
Boost leaks
A split hose, loose clamp or leaking intercooler lets pressurised air escape. The turbo is fine but the engine feels as if it is not working.
Wastegate or variable vane faults
The actuator controls boost pressure. On variable-geometry turbos, the vanes can stick with soot, leading to over- or under-boost.
Worn bearings and shaft play
Oil leaking past worn seals into the intake or exhaust gives smoke, and the shaft touching the housing makes a scraping noise.
How we do turbocharger repair
- 1
Check boost against the specification
A scan of requested versus actual boost shows whether the turbo is making pressure. We then smoke-test the intake path to find leaks before blaming the turbo.
- 2
Test the actuator and look for play
We command the wastegate or vanes, check the vacuum or electric actuator, and feel for shaft play and oil in the compressor housing.
- 3
Rebuild or replace
A damaged turbo can be rebuilt with a new core assembly or replaced. The quote shows both, so you choose on price and the parts type you prefer.
- 4
Find the cause and prime
The oil feed and return lines are checked and cleaned, since a blocked line will kill the new turbo. It is primed with oil before first start and boost is verified on a road test.
By make and model
BMW
The N54 twin-turbo engine is known for wastegate actuator rattle and boost faults, a distinct problem from complete turbo failure.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Turbos run extremely hot, and Dubai summers leave little margin: a hard run then an immediate shutdown in 45 degree air can cook oil in the bearing housing. Letting the engine idle briefly after a spirited drive, and changing oil on time, are the best protection here. Sand getting past a tired air filter also chews compressor blades.
Questions about turbocharger repair
Can I keep driving with a failing turbo?
It is not wise. A turbo that sheds metal can send fragments into the engine, and one leaking oil into the intake can foul the engine and the catalytic converter. Park up and have it checked.
Is it the turbo or something cheaper?
Frequently it is a hose, actuator or sensor. Testing boost and leaks first is why many customers avoid buying a new turbo they did not need.
Why did my new turbo fail so quickly elsewhere?
Usually the cause was never fixed: a blocked oil feed line, dirty oil or a boost leak. We check and clean these during the replacement.
Will it need tuning after replacement?
Normally not for a standard replacement. Actuator adaptation or relearn with the scanner is done where the manufacturer requires it.
