Dashboard Upholstery & Trim Repair
Many dashboards are not bare plastic: they are wrapped in vinyl or leather, often with stitching, and the trim around them is a mix of soft-touch and hard plastic. When the surface layer fails, it can often be repaired or re-covered without replacing the whole dash.

Signs you need dashboard upholstery & trim repair
- Leather or vinyl lifting at the edges and forming bubbles over the top pad
- Stitched seams that have split or pulled apart near the instrument hood
- A sticky or tacky feel on soft-touch trim, with fingerprints that do not wipe off
- Worn-through paint or soft-feel coating on switches and the gear surround
- Scratches and gouges on door cards and centre console panels
- Stains or colour fade on the section nearest the windscreen
- A loose, flapping section of covering along the passenger side where the dash meets the door
What usually causes it
Adhesive failure under heat
The glue holding a wrapped surface softens at high temperature, and the skin lifts as the foam moves. This is common on cars that bake in open car parks.
Soft-touch coating breaking down
Rubberised paint on buttons and trim gets sticky when body oils, hand sanitiser and sun act on it, and finally wears away.
Stitching under tension
Thread on a wrapped dash stretches as the material shrinks, and it pulls out of the seam.
Everyday wear
Keys, phones, sunglasses and jewellery scratch panels, and strong cleaning products take off the surface finish.
How we do dashboard upholstery & trim repair
- 1
Identify the material
Leather, vinyl, fabric, painted plastic and soft-touch coating all need different products. We test a hidden spot before choosing.
- 2
Remove the affected section
Where the covering has lifted, the panel is taken off the car so the old adhesive and foam can be cleaned properly, rather than glued on top.
- 3
Repair, re-stitch or re-wrap
Small tears are patched and recoloured. Larger areas are re-covered with new material cut to the panel, and stitched where the original was.
- 4
Colour match and finish
Dye and finishing coat are matched to the rest of the interior so the repair does not stand out from the driver's seat.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Dry heat is not the only enemy here; humidity near the coast and the habit of applying strong interior shine products also break down coatings. Choose a water-based, non-greasy interior cleaner and avoid putting shine sprays on the dash, because they attract dust and reflect in the windscreen. We can match colours on most interiors, including beige, which shows wear fastest. Quick cosmetic refreshes before a sale are common here, but a rushed spray over a lifting surface will peel again by the next summer, so we prepare the panel properly.
Questions about dashboard upholstery & trim repair
Can leather on the dashboard be re-wrapped?
Yes. The covering is removed from its panel and replaced with new leather or a suitable synthetic, usually stitched in a pattern similar to the original.
Can the sticky buttons be fixed without replacing them?
Often yes. The old coating is removed and the surface is refinished, which is cheaper than replacing switch caps that may no longer be available.
Will the new material match the old one?
We match colour and grain as closely as we can. For a large visible area, we may suggest re-covering the entire panel so there is no visible join.
What should I not use to clean the dash?
Avoid alcohol-heavy hand sanitiser wipes, bleach products and oily shine sprays. A damp microfibre cloth does the job.
How long does a re-wrapped panel last?
With good adhesive and a UV-stable material, several years. Much depends on whether the car lives in a garage or on the street, so we recommend a windscreen shade after any re-covering job.
Can you change the colour of the trim?
Yes, where the material allows. Dyeing a dark panel lighter is difficult, so we usually suggest going from light to dark, and show a sample first.
