Dashboard Crack Repair
A dashboard crack caused by heat and sun can be repaired in more than one way, and the right way depends on its length, its position and whether the pad is still flexible. A small split near the edge is a very different job from a network of cracks across the whole top.

Signs you need dashboard crack repair
- A single split that is growing a little longer each summer
- Several short cracks fanning out from a vent or a speaker grille
- A rough, chalky or shiny surface on top of the dash where the grain has gone
- A raised, lifting edge where the skin has started to separate from the foam below
- A crack right over the passenger airbag position
- Reflections of the cracks on the windscreen that distract you while driving
What usually causes it
Ultraviolet breakdown
The surface of the pad slowly loses flexibility. The material cannot move with temperature changes any more, so it opens along the weakest line.
Thermal cycling day and night
In summer the pad swells in the heat and shrinks in an air-conditioned cabin. That repeated movement works a small flaw into a long crack.
Aftermarket items stuck on the dash
Adhesive mounts for phones, sat navs and dash cameras pull on the surface, and removing them can tear the skin.
Pressure from behind
A swollen foam layer, or a broken support underneath, pushes upward and splits the top skin from beneath.
How we do dashboard crack repair
- 1
Look at the crack and feel the material
We press the surface to see if it is brittle or still supple, and check whether the crack passes through to the foam. This decides the method.
- 2
Small, clean cracks: fill and regrain
The crack is opened slightly, cleaned, filled with a flexible repair compound, and a grain pattern is pressed in so the texture matches.
- 3
Longer splits: plastic welding or reinforcement
A split can be stitched with a fine reinforcing mesh behind it or joined by heat, then filled and finished, so it does not reopen at the same place.
- 4
Colour match and protect
The area is tinted to the original shade with a flexible dye and sealed with a matt finish, so it does not reflect in the windscreen.
- 5
Know when to stop
If the pad is crazed all over, we say so honestly: a fitted dash cover or full replacement will last longer than patching one crack at a time.
By make and model
Mazda 3 and CX-7
Some Mazda dashboards of the late 2000s and early 2010s are known to turn sticky or glossy in high heat rather than crack. That surface needs a different treatment from a dry split.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
In the Gulf summer a windscreen sunshade is the cheapest protection a dashboard can have, and the cars we see with the worst cracking are almost always the ones left in the open without one. After a repair we recommend a shade, a dash cover or a treated windscreen film, because a repaired crack in an unprotected dash will often return the next year.
Questions about dashboard crack repair
Will the crack come back?
A repair on a pad that is still flexible usually holds. On a pad that has aged right through, new cracks form next to the repair, which is why we tell you when covering or replacing is the better spend.
Will you see the repair afterwards?
A well-finished repair on a small crack is hard to spot from the driver's seat. On long splits you may see a faint line in strong light, and we point this out before starting.
Can a crack over the airbag be repaired?
We do not weaken or glue the tear seam that lets the airbag open. If the crack is on that seam, the panel is replaced rather than repaired.
Is a dash cover a good idea?
A properly fitted moulded cover hides damage and blocks sun. Loose carpet-style covers can slide and sometimes trap heat, so we advise on which type suits your car.
