AC Expansion Valve Replacement
The expansion valve is a small metering device at the evaporator inlet that controls how much liquid refrigerant enters the coil. If it sticks or clogs, the evaporator is either starved or flooded, and cooling becomes poor or erratic. Some cars use an orifice tube instead, with a similar effect.

Signs you need ac expansion valve replacement
- Cold air one minute, warm the next, in a repeating cycle
- Frost on the evaporator pipes or the pipe at the firewall
- Very low suction pressure with high pressure on the other side of the gauges
- Cooling gets worse the longer the car runs
- Hissing or gurgling noise from behind the dash
- Poor cooling even though the gas charge and compressor are fine
What usually causes it
Blocked screen or orifice
The valve has a fine screen. Debris from a deteriorating drier, hose or compressor collects in it and starves the evaporator.
Moisture freezing at the valve
Water in the circuit freezes at the narrowest point and cuts the flow. When it thaws, the cooling returns, producing the on-and-off pattern.
Valve stuck open or closed
The internal diaphragm and sensing bulb can fail, either flooding the evaporator or letting almost nothing through.
Contamination after compressor failure
Metal fragments from a failed compressor lodge in the valve, so it should always be changed with the compressor repair.

Read pressures and temperatures
A low suction pressure, frosting at the valve and a large temperature drop across it suggest a restriction. We compare the pipe temperatures before and after the valve.

Recover the refrigerant
The system is emptied into the recovery machine and weighed. The valve is removed from its place near the firewall or on the evaporator.

Replace valve, drier and O-rings
A new valve is fitted with fresh O-rings and the receiver-drier is replaced. If contamination is visible, the lines are flushed.

Vacuum, charge and verify
A long vacuum removes moisture, then the system is charged by weight. We check the pressures stabilise and the evaporator outlet is cold without frost.

In humid coastal air, any moisture that gets in when the system is opened turns into ice at the expansion valve, and cheap roadside recharges that skip the vacuum step are the usual culprit. A long vacuum and a new drier whenever the system is opened is the best insurance in this climate.
Questions about ac expansion valve replacement
How do I know it is the valve and not low gas?
Gauge readings differ. Low gas gives low pressure on both sides, while a restricted valve gives very low suction and high head pressure. We also test the pipe temperature either side.
Can it be cleaned?
Sometimes a blocked screen can be cleaned, but if debris came from an ageing component, a new valve is the reliable fix, and cheap compared with repeated labour.
Why replace the drier too?
The drier absorbs moisture and filters particles. Once the system is open, its capacity is used up, so a new one protects the new valve.
Does my car have an expansion valve or an orifice tube?
It depends on the make and model. Either way, the job is similar, and the quote names the actual part for your car.
Can a blocked valve damage the compressor?
It can. A restricted valve starves the compressor of returning refrigerant and oil, so running the AC for long with the symptoms present risks a much dearer repair.
