The evaporator is the small radiator buried in the dashboard where refrigerant absorbs heat from the cabin air. Because it sits inside the climate box, a leak is hard to see, and the job of replacing it involves removing much of the dash. We confirm the diagnosis carefully before opening anything.

Signs you need ac evaporator repair
- The AC loses its gas again within weeks of a recharge, with no leak under the bonnet
- Oily, sweet or chemical smell from the vents
- Mist or a thin film on the inside of the windscreen when the AC is on
- Damp carpet or a wet patch under the dash
- Weak cooling that falls away after a few minutes
- Musty odour that returns soon after a vent cleaning
What usually causes it
Corrosion from trapped moisture
The evaporator is constantly wet from condensation. Over the years, acids from dust and moisture attack the thin aluminium and pinholes appear.
Blocked drain tube
If the condensation drain clogs, water pools in the climate box, speeds corrosion and leaks into the footwell.
Frozen evaporator
A weak airflow, dirty cabin filter or the wrong gas charge freezes the coil solid, blocking air and eventually stressing the tubes.
Dirt and mould build-up
A layer of dust and bacteria on the fins smells foul, reduces airflow and holds acid-forming moisture against the metal.
How we do ac evaporator repair

Prove the leak is there
An electronic sniffer at the drain tube and vent, plus UV dye checked with a lamp through the blower opening, confirms an evaporator leak before dash removal is quoted.

Check what else needs doing
The cabin filter, drain tube, expansion valve and blower are inspected, as they are accessible during the same job and the cost of access is shared.

Remove the dash and climate box
Steering column, airbags and the dashboard are disconnected following the manufacturer's procedure. The evaporator is replaced and new seals fitted.

Rebuild, evacuate and test
Everything is refitted, the system vacuumed and recharged, and we test for leaks and temperature. Dash electronics are checked for faults left by the removal.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Running the AC constantly means the evaporator is wet every day of the year, and the vents are rarely turned off to dry out. Many Dubai drivers also use recirculate mode, which keeps humid air inside and encourages the mould smell that sends them to a workshop first.
Questions about ac evaporator repair
Is the evaporator really the problem or can another part be leaking?
Hoses, the condenser and compressor seals leak far more often. We check every accessible joint first and only call it an evaporator when dye or a sniffer proves it.
Why does the labour cost more than the part?
Reaching the evaporator involves removing the dashboard, which is a labour-heavy job. The part itself is relatively modest.
Can I use a cleaning spray for the smell?
A cleaner can freshen a dusty evaporator, but if the smell is sweet and oily, it points to a refrigerant leak and a spray will not help.
Can you do a cheaper repair?
Putting stop-leak into the system risks clogging the expansion valve and condenser, so we do not recommend it. Replacement is the reliable fix.
How long is the car off the road for an evaporator job?
Plan for one to three days. The dashboard, centre console and sometimes the steering column come out, and everything is tested after refitting before we call you for delivery.
