AC Blower Motor Repair
The blower motor is the fan inside the dashboard that pushes air through the vents. The refrigerant side of the AC can be perfect, but if the blower is weak or dead, you feel nothing. Several different parts can cause the same symptom, so testing each saves needless replacement.

Signs you need ac blower motor repair
- Air barely trickling from the vents, even on the highest fan setting
- Fan works only on the top speed, or only on some speeds
- No airflow at all, although the AC light comes on
- Squealing, rattling or a flapping sound that changes with fan speed
- Burning smell when the fan is switched on
- Fan cuts in and out when you drive over bumps
What usually causes it
Failed blower resistor or module
The resistor or electronic module sets fan speed. If it fails, the lower speeds disappear and only the top speed works because it bypasses the resistor. It is a cheap, common part.
Worn motor brushes or bearings
After years of use, the motor bearings dry out and the brushes wear, so the fan slows, squeals or stops.
Debris in the fan cage
Leaves, dust or bits of a degraded cabin filter get drawn in and unbalance the squirrel-cage fan, causing rattling or reduced flow.
Wiring and connector heat damage
High current through a loose connector melts the plastic. The blower then loses power, and the burnt smell warns you before a fault grows.

Check fuse, relay and power at the motor
We confirm voltage reaches the blower on each speed. Good voltage with no rotation condemns the motor; poor voltage points back to the resistor or wiring.

Inspect the cabin filter and intake
A blocked filter limits airflow far more than most people expect, so we check it and the intake before taking the blower out.

Remove and test the motor
The blower is dropped from under the dash, usually behind the glovebox. We spin it free, clean the fan and check for play and brush wear.

Replace and verify every speed
A new motor, resistor or connector is fitted as needed. We test all speeds, listen for noise, and check the airflow at every vent position.

In July the blower often runs on its highest setting for hours a day, which wears out brushes and resistors earlier. Dust pulled in through the cowl also settles on the fan blades, so a blower that sounds fine in the cool months can start rattling when summer demand begins.
Questions about ac blower motor repair
Why does my fan work only on high?
That is the signature of a failed resistor or speed-control module. The highest speed bypasses it. The repair is usually modest.
Is a squealing blower dangerous?
Not directly, but a failing motor can overheat and in rare cases melt its connector. If you smell burning, switch the fan off and have it checked.
Could weak airflow be the cabin filter?
Yes, very often. A clogged filter is the first thing we check, and replacing it may be all that is needed.
Can I get the job done quickly?

Why does the blower squeal only when the car is cold?
Dry bearings or a lightly rusted motor shaft often squeal until they warm up. It is a sign that the motor is wearing, and it usually returns more often until it seizes.
