Fuel Pump Replacement

The fuel pump pushes petrol or diesel from the tank to the engine at the pressure the injection system needs. When it weakens the engine starves for fuel, so you get hesitation, stalling or a no-start. We confirm the pump is the cause with a pressure test before replacing it.

Signs you need fuel pump replacement

  • The engine cranks normally but does not catch, especially after the car has been sitting in the heat
  • Sputtering or surging at highway speed, then recovering
  • Loss of power when climbing a ramp, overtaking or carrying a full load
  • A loud whine from the rear seat or boot area that was not there before
  • The car stalls and restarts after a few minutes
  • Hard starting when the fuel tank is nearly empty

What usually causes it

Worn pump motor

The pump is a small electric motor running in the fuel, which cools it. After years of use the brushes and commutator wear, and the pump delivers less flow than the engine needs at high demand.

Running on a low tank

Because fuel cools and lubricates the pump, driving with the tank near empty makes it run hotter. In Gulf summers this shortens its life, so keeping a reserve is a cheap protection.

Blocked fuel filter or tank strainer

Dirt and rust in the tank clog the inlet strainer or filter. The pump then works against resistance, and its flow falls even if the motor itself is healthy.

Electrical supply problems

A failing fuel pump relay, a corroded connector or a low-voltage supply can mimic a dead pump. The wiring needs checking so that a new pump is not damaged by the same fault.

How we do fuel pump replacement

  1. 1

    Check the basics first

We confirm there is fuel in the tank, read stored codes and listen for the pump priming when the ignition goes on. Relay, fuse and the voltage at the pump connector are tested before anything is removed.

  2. 2

    Fuel pressure and flow test

A gauge on the fuel rail shows static pressure and what it does under load. Low pressure or a quick drop after switching off points to the pump or a leaking regulator or injector.

  3. 3

    Replace the pump assembly

The fuel is safely handled, the tank access panel or the tank itself is opened and the pump module is changed. The strainer is renewed, the seal replaced and the float sender checked while it is out.

  4. 4

    Prime, test and clear codes

After refitting we prime the system, check for leaks at every connection and confirm pressure to specification. Fuel-related fault codes are cleared and a road test checks that the hesitation has gone.

Book fuel pump replacement

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Fuel lines and tank sit close to hot exhaust parts, and a tank baking in a summer car park makes a marginal pump struggle sooner. The pump is also cooled by the fuel around it, so filling up before the needle reaches the red is worth the habit in this climate.

Questions about fuel pump replacement

How can I tell a fuel pump fault from a bad battery or starter?

A weak battery or starter gives slow or no cranking. A fuel pump fault gives a normal crank that never fires, and the pump's brief hum when you turn the key on may be missing.

Should the fuel filter be changed at the same time?

Where the car has a separate filter, yes, since a clogged one can be the reason the pump failed. On many cars the filter is built into the pump module and is renewed with it.

Is it safe to work on the fuel system?

It is safe when done correctly. Pressure is relieved, ignition sources are kept away and spills are contained. This is one reason the job is done in the workshop and not at a car park.

Will bad fuel kill a pump?

Contaminated fuel, water or heavy dirt can clog the strainer and wear the pump. If we find debris in the tank we tell you, and cleaning the tank may be recommended on the quote.

What do I need to arrange to get my car to you?

Book online and we arrange pickup and delivery. A car that will not start is moved on a recovery vehicle.
