Engine Bay Cleaning & Dressing

Engine bay cleaning removes the dust, sand and old oil film that build up under the bonnet, then finishes rubber and plastic with a dressing that does not attract dirt. Done carefully, it is safe for modern cars. It also shows up leaks, frayed belts and chewed wiring that grime was hiding, which makes it useful before a sale or an inspection.

How we do engine bay cleaning & dressing

  1. 1

    Cool down and protect

The engine is cleaned only when cool. The battery terminals, alternator, fuse box, open connectors and air intake are covered, and on hybrids the orange high-voltage cables and inverter are left alone.

  2. 2

    Dry dust removal

Loose sand and leaves are vacuumed and brushed out first, including the scuttle drains. Removing them dry means less water is needed later.

  3. 3

    Degrease and rinse gently

A degreaser suited to aluminium and plastic is worked in with soft brushes, then rinsed with low-pressure water or wiped off, never blasted with a jet wash. Stubborn oil gets a second pass.

  4. 4

    Dry, dress and check

The bay is blown dry, covers come off and the engine is run to drive out any moisture. Plastics and rubber get a water-based dressing. We tell you about any leak, crack or loose part the cleaning has uncovered.

Why clean the engine bay

  • A thick layer of dust and sand across the engine cover and inner wings
  • Oily grime around the valve cover or under the oil filler cap
  • Leaves and sand piled in the scuttle panel under the wipers
  • Faded, grey plastic covers that look older than the rest of the car
  • A car you are about to sell or show to a buyer
  • Paw prints or debris that suggest a cat has been sleeping on the engine

What usually causes it

Dust drawn in by the fan

The radiator fan pulls air through the bay all the time, and with it the dust that hangs in the air here. It settles on every flat surface and sticks to any trace of oil.

Small leaks and oil mist

A sweating gasket or breather deposits a thin film of oil that binds the dust into a sticky crust. Cleaning removes the crust so the source can be seen.

Sun and heat on plastics

Engine bay plastics sit between engine heat and sun through the bonnet. They dry out and fade to grey, and rubber hoses lose their sheen.

Blocked drains

Leaves and sand in the scuttle and cowl drains hold water after rain or washing. Left there, it can rust the panel or find its way into the cabin filter housing.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

The Emirates are hard on engine bays: fine dust, high heat and occasional heavy rain that turns that dust into mud. Cats also climb into warm engine bays in residential car parks, and it is worth checking under the bonnet if the car has been parked outside for a while. Silicone shine products look good on the day but hold sand, so we use a dry-finish dressing that suits the conditions here.

Questions about engine bay cleaning & dressing

Is it safe to wash an engine?

Yes, when it is done cold, with the electrics covered and without high pressure. Damage comes from jet-washing connectors and a hot engine, which we avoid.

Can it be done with a mobile wash at home?

We do this at the workshop, where there is the drainage and space for degreasers and the drying step. If you want the car collected, we can arrange pickup and delivery.

Will cleaning stop an oil leak?

No, it only shows where the leak is. If we see fresh oil coming from a gasket or seal after cleaning, we tell you, and the repair can be quoted separately.

How often should the engine bay be cleaned?

For most cars, once or twice a year is enough. It is also worth doing before selling the car, or after a long trip on sandy roads.

Do you clean under the engine as well?

This service covers the top of the engine and the bay. Cleaning the underside and undercarriage is a separate job and can be quoted if you need it.
