Key Fob Battery Replacement
Your key fob runs on a small coin battery that fades over time. When it weakens the remote loses range, then works only up close, and finally stops. Swapping the cell is a short job we can do where the car is parked, with the fob tested on the car before we leave.

How we do key fob battery replacement
- 1
Identify the fob and battery type
Fobs use coin cells such as the CR2032 or CR2025, but the number depends on the make and model. We check the one printed on the old cell and match it, rather than guessing.
- 2
Open the case carefully
The case is separated at its seam with the correct tool, or the mechanical key is removed first on fobs that open that way. Care is needed with the ribbon contacts and the rubber button pad.
- 3
Fit the new cell and clean contacts
The old cell is removed, the contacts wiped clean and the new cell is installed with the right side facing up. The case is clipped back and the mechanical key refitted.
- 4
Test on the car
Every button is tried on the vehicle: lock, unlock, boot and panic where fitted. For push-button start cars, we confirm the car recognises the fob and starts normally.
Signs it is time
- You have to stand next to the car for the remote to lock or unlock it
- Several presses are needed before the doors respond
- A warning on the dash such as key battery low or key not detected
- Push-button start will not start the car unless the fob is held against the button
- The small light on the fob is dim or does not flash when you press a button
- Keyless entry works on some doors but not on others
What usually causes it
Ordinary battery ageing
Fob cells are small and last a limited time, typically measured in years, depending on how often you press the buttons and whether the car has keyless entry that keeps listening for the fob.
Heat exposure
A fob left on the dashboard or in a hot car loses battery life faster. Keeping the fob out of the sun is the easiest way to make a cell last.
Worn or corroded contacts
Sweat, humidity and pocket dust build up on the battery contacts inside the fob. A fresh cell in a dirty holder can still give a weak signal, so the contacts are cleaned.
A fault that is not the battery
If a new battery does not help, the cause may be a worn button pad, a cracked circuit board from a drop or a fob that has lost its pairing. We tell you which before suggesting any programming.
In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman
Most people here park outdoors in strong sun, and a fob left on the dashboard sits in far more heat than the battery is designed for. Keeping the fob in a bag or pocket, not on the dash, helps the cell last, and carrying a spare cell on long trips is cheap insurance.
Questions about key fob battery replacement
Will I lose my key programming if the battery is out?
In normal cases no, as the remote function is stored in the fob and the car, not in the battery. If the fob stops working after a change, we check the pairing and tell you before any extra work.
Can you do it at my office or home?
Yes, this is a quick job that does not need a workshop. Book online with the car's location and we come to you, and the cost is on the written quote before we start.
Why is my car not starting even though the fob works?
A starting problem is usually the car battery, not the fob. If the doors unlock on the remote but the engine will not turn over, the starter battery needs testing instead.
Can I change it myself?
Often you can, and the manual shows the method. The risks are using the wrong cell, tearing a ribbon contact or snapping a clip, which is why some owners prefer to have it done.
What if I have lost the fob altogether?
That is a different job. A lost key needs programming equipment and proof of ownership, and we would discuss it separately before quoting anything.
