Battery Health Check

A battery usually gives little warning before it fails, and a car may start perfectly well at 8am and refuse at noon. A health check measures how much current the battery can still deliver and how well it recovers, so you can decide to replace it on your terms, not on the roadside.

How we do battery health check

  1. 1

    Visual and terminal inspection

We check the case for swelling or leaks, terminals for corrosion, clamps for tightness, the hold-down for movement and the date code on the battery.

  2. 2

    Resting voltage and conductance test

A fully charged healthy battery rests at about 12.6 volts. A conductance tester then compares the battery's capacity with its rated cold cranking amps and returns a state-of-health result.

  3. 3

    Cranking and charging test

We read voltage during starting, which should not collapse, and then charging voltage with the engine running to confirm the alternator is looking after the battery.

  4. 4

    Clear recommendation

You get a straightforward answer: good, weak and worth watching, or replace now. If a replacement is needed we quote the right type, including AGM, and can fit it right there.

Book battery health check

Signs it is time

  • The battery is more than two years old and the car lives in the Gulf heat
  • Engine cranks a bit more slowly than it used to, particularly after standing
  • Headlights dim when you start the engine
  • Battery case is swollen, leaking or covered with white or blue crust at the terminals
  • You are about to travel and want the car to start when you get back
  • Start-stop system rarely activates, or the dash warns of battery condition

What usually causes it

Heat-driven ageing

High temperatures speed up the chemical reactions inside a lead-acid battery, so its life is usually shorter here than the manufacturer's headline figure. Replacement every two to three years is typical.

Sulphation

A battery left partly discharged develops hard lead sulphate crystals on the plates. They reduce capacity and cannot always be reversed.

Terminal corrosion and loose clamps

Corroded terminals add resistance, so the battery seems weak even if it is healthy. Cleaning them is sometimes all it takes.

Undercharging or overcharging

A faulty regulator or smart charging fault can leave the battery undercharged, or boil it dry. A health check therefore includes charging voltage.

By make and model

BMW / Mercedes-Benz

These makes usually require a new battery to be registered or coded to the car so the charging system adjusts. We check whether this applies to your model before replacement.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

We suggest a check before the hottest months and again before long summer travel. Batteries in cars parked outdoors all day experience under-bonnet temperatures well past 60 degrees, so a battery that tests borderline in May is unlikely to survive until September.

Questions about battery health check

Is a simple voltage check enough?

No. A battery can show 12.6 volts and still fail under load. A load or conductance test shows whether it can deliver the current needed to start the engine.

How long does a car battery last in the UAE?

Often around two to three years, though quality, usage and heat all matter. A check each year after the second is a sensible habit.

What battery type does my car need?

Standard flooded, EFB and AGM batteries are not interchangeable in cars designed for start-stop. We confirm the correct type and size for your car before quoting.

Can you recycle my old battery?

Yes. Used batteries are taken away at replacement for recycling, which is how lead-acid batteries should be handled.
