Hybrid & EV Diagnostics

Hybrid and electric cars carry a high-voltage battery, an inverter and electric motors in addition to, or instead of, a normal engine. Diagnosing them needs tools that read battery cell data and an understanding of the safety rules around high voltage.

Signs you need hybrid & ev diagnostics

  • A hybrid system or battery warning on the dash, or a message to see a service centre
  • Lower electric range or a battery gauge that drops quickly
  • The petrol engine runs more often than it used to
  • The car goes into reduced-power mode or will not switch to Ready
  • Charging stops early, or a charge port will not lock or start
  • The cooling fan for the battery is loud or runs all the time

What usually causes it

Weak cells in the hybrid battery

The battery is made of many cells. When one or two weaken, the pack's voltage balance drifts and the car uses the engine more. The scan shows the voltage of each block.

Battery cooling problems

Dust blocking the battery cooling intake or a dying fan makes the pack hot, which shortens its life. This matters in our climate.

Inverter or coolant faults

The power electronics have their own coolant loop. A weak pump or low coolant can set a fault and limit power.

12-volt battery trouble

The small conventional battery wakes the system up. A weak one produces many confusing warnings on hybrids and EVs.

How we do hybrid & ev diagnostics

  1. 1

    Check the 12-volt side first

Many hybrid faults are caused by a weak auxiliary battery, so we test it before opening the high-voltage system.

  2. 2

    Read hybrid and battery data

We read cell-block voltages, temperatures, state of charge and insulation readings and compare them with a healthy pack.

  3. 3

    Inspect cooling and connections

The battery fan, intake filter, coolant level and visible high-voltage connections are checked, with the system isolated by trained personnel before anything is touched.

  4. 4

    Explain the state of health

You get a clear view of the battery's condition and whether repair, rebalancing or replacement is the sensible route.

Book hybrid & ev diagnostics

By make and model

Toyota Prius and Lexus hybrids

Hybrid battery cooling air intakes can clog with dust, so cleaning the intake and fan is a routine check on these models in a dusty climate.

In Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman

Batteries dislike heat, and the climate here is the toughest test for a hybrid or EV pack. Parking in shade or underground and keeping vents clear makes a real difference to battery life. Anyone buying a used hybrid in Dubai should get the pack's health read before paying, as a replacement is a large cost. We do not guess at range, and we are clear about what our tools can and cannot read on your model.

Questions about hybrid & ev diagnostics

Can you work on a high-voltage system?

Diagnosis and the checks on this page are carried out with high-voltage isolation procedures. If a repair needs specialist equipment, we tell you before we start.

Is a hybrid battery always expensive to replace?

It can be, but options exist beyond new: rebalanced, refurbished or used packs. The choice and price are listed on the written quote.

How do I know my battery's health before buying a used hybrid?

A diagnostic read shows block voltages and imbalance, and that is far better evidence than the dashboard gauge.

Can you diagnose charging problems on an EV?

We can read charge-related faults and check the vehicle side. If the fault is in your wall charger or supply, an electrician is needed for that part.
