Wheel Alignment: The Hidden Problem That's Silently Destroying Your Tyres

Poor wheel alignment is one of the most common and most costly undetected problems in cars today. Learn what misalignment is, how it happens, the damage it causes, and why a £60 alignment check can save you £400 in tyre replacements.

What Is Wheel Alignment?

Wheel alignment (sometimes called tracking) refers to the precise angles at which your tyres contact the road. Three key angles define alignment: camber (the inward/outward tilt of the tyre when viewed from the front), toe (whether the front of the tyres point inward or outward when viewed from above), and caster (the angle of the steering axis).

These angles are precisely set by manufacturers to optimise handling, tyre wear, fuel economy, and straight-line stability. Even small deviations — often invisible to the eye — cause serious problems over time.

How Alignment Gets Knocked Out

Alignment is far less stable than most drivers realise. It can be knocked out of specification by:

  • Hitting a pothole at speed
  • Mounting a kerb — even at low speed
  • Minor collisions or scrapes
  • Worn suspension components (ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushings)
  • Normal wear over time — particularly on vehicles over 40,000 km

The Real Cost of Misalignment: Tyre Wear

Misalignment is one of the most expensive undetected car problems because it silently destroys tyres. Even 2–3mm of toe misalignment causes a tyre to drag sideways slightly with every rotation — like walking with your feet permanently pointed inward. The result is feathering or one-sided tyre wear that reduces tyre life from 50,000 km down to 15,000–20,000 km.

At £80–£120 per tyre, replacing a full set of four tyres that wore out prematurely costs £320–£480 — all preventable with a £50–£70 alignment check.

Effects Beyond Tyre Wear

Misalignment doesn't just eat tyres. It also:

  • Increases fuel consumption: Dragging tyres increase rolling resistance — studies show misalignment can increase fuel use by 5–10%
  • Affects handling and safety: The car may drift or pull to one side, requiring constant steering correction — dangerous in sudden manoeuvres
  • Stresses suspension components: Angles outside specification place abnormal loads on ball joints, tie rods, and wheel bearings — accelerating their wear
  • Reduces braking efficiency: Tyres at incorrect angles don't lay flat during braking, reducing the contact patch and grip

How Alignment Is Measured and Corrected

Modern alignment is performed using 3D wheel alignment equipment — sensors clamped to each wheel broadcast data to a computer that measures all four alignment angles simultaneously with sub-millimetre precision. The technician then adjusts toe (via tie rod ends), camber (via eccentric bolts or shims where adjustable), and checks caster angle.

The full process takes 30–60 minutes and produces a printed before/after report showing exactly what was corrected.

4-Wheel vs 2-Wheel Alignment

2-wheel (front axle) alignment: adjusts only the front wheels. Suitable for basic front-wheel-drive vehicles where the rear axle is fixed and non-adjustable.

4-wheel alignment: measures and adjusts all four corners. Required for AWD vehicles, rear-wheel-drive vehicles, and any car where the rear axle is adjustable. Always worth doing on vehicles with independent rear suspension.

How Often Should Alignment Be Checked?

Check alignment:

  • Every 20,000 km as routine preventative maintenance
  • After any significant kerb strike or pothole impact
  • When fitting new tyres — so they wear correctly from the start
  • After any suspension or steering component replacement
  • If the car pulls to one side, or if you notice unusual tyre wear
