What Is Tyre Rotation?

Why Tyres Wear Unevenly

Front tyres and rear tyres experience completely different forces during normal driving:

  • Front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicles: The front tyres handle acceleration, steering, and most braking. They wear 2–3x faster than the rear tyres.
  • Rear-wheel drive (RWD) vehicles: Rear tyres handle acceleration and wear faster on the inner edges.
  • All-wheel drive (AWD): Wear is more even but still varies — slight differences in wear patterns create dangerous torque binding if not corrected.

Without rotation, your front tyres will be dangerously bald while your rears still look new — forcing you to buy two tyres instead of spreading wear across four.

Tyre Rotation Patterns

Forward cross (recommended for FWD): Front tyres move straight to the rear; rear tyres cross to the opposite front positions.

Rearward cross (recommended for RWD and 4WD): Rear tyres move straight forward; front tyres cross to the opposite rear positions.

X-pattern: All four tyres cross — front-left to rear-right, front-right to rear-left, and vice versa. Often used for AWD vehicles.

Side-to-side: Used only for directional tyres (which must stay on the same axle) or when carrying a full-size spare that matches the other four tyres.

How Often Should You Rotate Tyres?

The standard recommendation is every 8,000–12,000 km or every 6 months. Many workshops combine tyre rotation with an oil service — making it convenient and ensuring it's never forgotten.

For AWD vehicles, some manufacturers specify tighter rotation intervals of every 8,000 km to prevent drivetrain stress from tyre diameter differences.

With regular rotation, the total mileage you extract from that set increases from around 30,000 km (unrotated FWD front tyres) to 50,000–60,000 km across all four.   • Visible difference in tread depth between front and rear tyres
