7 Signs Your Engine Needs Immediate Repair (UAE Heat Makes These Worse)

These 7 engine warning signs are serious in any climate. In the UAE, the extreme heat makes each one escalate faster. Recognise them early and you could save thousands of dirhams.

Why UAE Heat Accelerates Engine Problems

An engine warning that might give you weeks of warning in a cooler climate can escalate to catastrophic failure within days — or hours — in Dubai's summer heat. The combination of extreme ambient temperatures, stop-start traffic, and air conditioning systems working at full load creates conditions that stress every engine component to its limit.

These are the seven signs our Al Quoz workshop sees most often before serious — and expensive — engine damage occurs. If you notice any of them, do not wait.

1. Check Engine Light — Especially with Performance Changes

The check engine light (CEL) can indicate anything from a loose fuel cap to a misfiring cylinder. The critical question is whether it is accompanied by any changes in how the car drives: rougher idle, reduced power, hesitation, or increased fuel consumption. A CEL with performance changes requires immediate diagnosis.

Why it is worse in UAE heat: Many CEL triggers — oxygen sensor failures, catalytic converter issues, and fuel system problems — are worsened by high operating temperatures. What triggers the light in summer may not have been detectable in the cooler months.

Cost of ignoring it: A faulty oxygen sensor left running causes the ECU to run the engine rich (excess fuel), which damages the catalytic converter — turning a AED 300 sensor replacement into a AED 2,000+ catalytic replacement.

2. Oil Pressure Warning Light

This is the most urgent warning on this list. If the oil pressure warning light comes on while driving, stop the engine immediately. Low oil pressure means the engine's moving components are not being lubricated — metal is running against metal. Continued driving for even a few minutes can cause irreversible damage: scored bearings, seized pistons, or a destroyed crankshaft.

Causes: Low oil level, oil pump failure, oil leak, blocked oil passage.

What to do: Pull over, stop the engine. Check the oil level. Do not restart the engine until the cause is identified and resolved.

3. Knocking or Ticking Sounds from the Engine

A knocking sound — particularly a deep, repetitive knock that increases with engine speed — indicates worn or damaged engine bearings. A rapid ticking sound can indicate low oil pressure, worn hydraulic lifters, or a timing chain issue. Neither should be driven on.

Why it is worse in UAE heat: Engine oil thins at high temperatures, reducing the protective film between moving parts. Vehicles using the wrong oil grade for UAE conditions (particularly older vehicles not updated to full synthetic) are at higher risk.

Cost of ignoring it: A bearing knock diagnosed early may cost AED 1,500–3,000 to repair. Left until the engine seizes: a full engine replacement can cost AED 8,000–25,000 depending on the vehicle.

4. White or Blue Smoke from the Exhaust

The colour of exhaust smoke tells a specific story:

  • White smoke (thick, continuous): Coolant is entering the combustion chamber — classic sign of a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. This is a serious repair.
  • Blue smoke: Engine oil is being burned in the combustion chamber, indicating worn piston rings, valve seals, or cylinder walls.
  • Black smoke: The engine is running too rich (excess fuel). Often a faulty injector or MAF sensor.

White or blue smoke requires immediate attention. Neither should be left.

5. Overheating Temperature Gauge

A rising temperature gauge that reaches the red zone is a clear signal to stop the engine. As covered in more detail in our guide to car overheating in Dubai, the causes range from low coolant and a leaking hose to a failed thermostat or water pump.

What makes it urgent: A sustained overheating event can warp the aluminium cylinder head — a AED 3,000–8,000 repair that is entirely avoidable if you stop the engine promptly.

6. Loss of Power or Rough Running

If your engine hesitates under acceleration, runs roughly at idle, or you notice a significant drop in performance — particularly if the check engine light is also on — the engine needs attention. Common causes include misfiring cylinders (spark plugs, ignition coils, or injectors), a blocked fuel filter, or air intake issues.

Why it is worse in UAE heat: Spark plugs and ignition coils are more likely to fail at high temperatures. Running a misfiring cylinder causes the unburned fuel to pass into the exhaust and damage the catalytic converter within a relatively short period.

7. Increasing Oil Consumption

If you are adding oil between services — particularly if your vehicle was not doing this before — it indicates oil is either leaking or being burned internally. Small leaks become larger leaks in the heat as gaskets and seals are under greater thermal stress. Internal burning suggests wear to piston rings or valve seals.

What to do: Have the engine inspected to identify the source. A minor seal replacement caught early is far less expensive than an engine that runs dry because the consumption was ignored.

How to Check Your Engine Between Services

The simplest thing you can do is check your oil level monthly. Pull the dipstick with a cold engine, wipe it, reinsert, and check. The oil should be between the minimum and maximum markers and should be amber-brown — not black (overdue), milky (head gasket issue), or absent (serious problem).
